When a few of us, went to the state fair sunday.. we met the owner of the sugar mill... and he let us know we could go out to the plantation and watch the making of molasses.. so.. we thought this might be an interesting trip.
We will meet at 930 am, starbucks on garners ferry rd, and motor on out.. the website is http://www.coastal-sc.com/syrup/
This four generation recipe's blend of cane and corn still offers some of the best tasting pancake syrup around", states syrup maker Marvin Russ of Cowards, South Carolina. He continues, "One thing for sure, it is still home made and done so in a labor of love, cause we do it ourselves by hand, referring to himself, his brother (Wilbur), and their sons (Jason and Mike)". He stated that Ted and Lee Fleming of Kingstree have been coming up here for about fours years helping and we all make a good team. When we get started, we don't stop 'till the job is done".
heading off the main highway, US Highway 52, in the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina approximately 15 miles south of Florence down Old #4 on the Lyches River County Park Road to the Russ Brothers Syrup Producing Facility which is nestled in the woods not too far from the river.
Once we leave there, we will be heading to a grist mill.. to stock up on grits and the like before winter hits!

Carol, If you're still on, our schedules has finally lighten up. If we don't hear differently, we'll see you at Starbucks (I'm assuming the one in front of Targets??) If not going or this is the wrong Starbucks, please round me up at 960-0697. Thanks. See ya'll there.
We had such an awesome time. When we got out to the sugar mill, they couldn't cook because they got three inches of rain, but the owners were more then willing to give us a tour, and explain what they might have been doing if they were cooking. Inside the sugar shack, it smelled so good.. made you want pancakes!
We then headed our way to boykin to see the grist mill. The views were spectacular, and the man working inside the mill was funny, and very informative. He took us on a tour of the mill upstairs and down. We all bought syrup, molasses.. grits and corn flour. Then we went over to the lil boykin grill and some of us had dinner.. Pics soon to follow.. I had a great time and was happy to see everyone!
