Leather in full sun all day - Nourish enough?
Leather in full sun all day - Nourish enough?
Hi all,
This is off-topic, but I just *know* you detailing titans will have the right advice (and products)!
I have two black leather Pottery Barn club chairs or whatever they are called. They were a bit pricey, but we've had them for close to 12 years or more and they still look great. For the last year, they have sat in our living room in full sun. (No, I can't move them out of the sun, it's a really small house.) No surprise, the leather is starting to get a little dry....in the past, I've used Lexol & Coach leather products, just whatever we had in the house - probably shoe and purse products.
I just bought a huge box of Prima goodies, including 2 bottles of Nourish. Do you all think that I need to use anything else to protect these guys? I hate doing housework, so if I am going to "wax" these things, I'd like to do it once a year or less!
thanks,Anna

Meguire's One Step Leather Care "Cleans and conditions all leathers in one easy step"...I used it on Molly's Steering Wheel yesterday and I think it did a Great Job...it wasn't really dirty, but I've been using 303 on it thus far.

Nourish is a conditioner and does very well at maintaining leather in good condition. However if it's dry and cracked or needs cleaning, you're probably better off doing Leatherique and then maintaining with Nourish.
Just my 2 cents.

i would also recommend the Griot's LeatherCare spray after your
reconditioner app. it is super easy to use, just like a QD. when you
dust your chair every week before your vac, just wipe it down with the
LeatherCare Spray.
outmotoring has it too.

Of course! Try www.detailersparadise.com
I don't stock Leatherique at this time.
Richard
Haha, looks like we posted at the same time.

You can order both from www.Detailersparadise.com
So glad I asked.... I went to DP and clicked on the "Leather Care" link and all that came up was Nourish. So I assumed they didn't have Leatherique. Went back after seeing your replies and you have to get at it through the Interior Care link!
Oh no!!!! I just realized that I'm planning on using Leatherique on my 1 ton dually truck!
I fear that this may mean that my new OCD compulsion is spreading from my Mini!
Repeat after me: I will NOT be compulsive about the cleanliness of a vehicle that even with the use of a stepstool has areas that I can't reach.

They're two different products.
Nourish takes a bit of time to massage into the leather with your hands, and is more of a deep conditioner. Used periodically, it will keep your leather in great condition.
Leathercare Spray is a "quick detailer" for leather - sort of like Nero is for plastic and Vinyl. Leathercare spray has some light conditioning/cleaning properties, but primarily makes leather LOOK fantastic for a while. It's a great weekly wipe down for your leather, while Nourish is something I use less frequently - I use both products.

Acckkk... this ocd habit is getting expensive!
I think now I need three leather care products! When will it end??
Leatherique to initially clean the dirty light gray seats of the dually truck; Nourish for monthly applications ie "nourishment" for the Mini and the truck; Leathercare spray for QD when I do the weekly Mini washes.
AND I'll be needing to order more Hydro soon. I will have totally gone over to the dark side if I order a gallon!

Actually you need to add a cleaner to your list.
You should actually clean your leather more frequently then condition it. I like the Four Star cleaner and use it weekly. Nourish is a once/month application like Blimey says. I use the Leatherique system only once a year during the hot part of the summer. It helps to have the air temps as hot as possible to aid in the cleaning. Caution: Leatherique is not an easy process. The oil the lifts the gunk from the pores of the leather gets very sticky with all the crud and is very difficult to remove. I use a sponge with warm water and also some of the conditioner to aid in the removal. Its really gross the first time you use it on dirty leather, but if you keep up with the weekly cleanings it is far less difficult the next time.
Cleaning the leather allows the conditioners to penetrate. If the pores are plugged the conditioner can not get in and nourish the leather so it dries out and cracks. That's why it is more important to clean then condition. If you simply wipe conditioner on you're fooling yourself.

Nurish and the standard Griot's LeatherCare are similar items.
LeatherCare Spray is essentially a detailing spray for leather. it's
very easy to use. just spray into your MF utility towel and wipe your
seat/chair. no worries about shiny or sticky or slimy surface. it will
dry matte and dry to the touch, smells fantastic too.
And yes to Maybee's cleaning point... I use Lexol cleaner, usually before I use Nourish... my leather stays *fairly* clean... I think weekly cleaning would be overkill for me... actually, these days, weekly *anything* is overkill for me... rarely do I wash the car weekly...
Generally, Nourish would be enough, but your situation is a little extreme. For added UV protection, I would apply a light coat of 303 Aerospace Protectant to the leather every three months. The added UV blocker is just what you need.
