Exhaust Hanger

So i did a oneball, and the original exhaust hanger is rusted through, therefore useless. Any ideas on how to get the entire factory hanger out, or what i can do instead, right now everything form the muffler to the tip is just hanging there so when i hit bumps it kind of slides down and by the end of ym drive to wherever, my exhaust tip is about 8 inches lower than it should be and i have to yank it back up in to place.

So i need the exhaust hanger off or another solution to hang my muffler

You can buy the hangers from the dealer, they are fairly cheap. It's two pieces, the bottom, and a top piece. A screw on each side holds it together. Just take out the screws, figure out which piece you need and give the parts department a call.

my dealer was estimating it to be about $225 to replace my rusting falling apart hanger ( MC '04).....does the hanger screw into the car underside and then wrap around the muffler or does it screw into the muffler too.....any idea on what just the part costs?

It looks like it would be easy enough to replace yourself. Just slide under there and see which part you need. Like Jahmills said, it's 2 pieces.

You may have to wedge a piece of wood or something farther forward on the exhaust to hold it down so you can get to it.

so im assuming that the only way to get a hanger that would work is through mini? no aftermarket ones at autozone that could work, and be like 5 dollars haha

You could always use bailing wire. That would be even cheaper.

Just go to a muffler shop and have them fix it up. If the exhaust system itself isn't rotted apart, they should be able to fab something up for cheap. If they're crooks, they'll try to sell you a new exhaust.

The thing is, the OEM hanger is made to fit exactly around the stock muffler & resonator. Each piece is sort of C shaped, and together they form a perfect fit around the muffler in the groove that is made into it. Mine was rusted through on top, and I think I paid around $30 at the dealer for the top piece, which includes the two actual "hangers" that attach to the rubber mounts. Only about a 20 minute job to replace. There is not a lot of room under our cars, and I would think just using metal banding or some other solution to hold it up would allow for it to move around and rattle against the suspension or the heat shields.

I have a bunch of hangars sitting in my Jeep from putting my car back to stock. Take a pic of which style you need and I'll see if I have the right one for you. Free+ shipping (I was gonna toss them but hadn't gotten to it yet).

My tongue was firmly planted in my cheek when I suggested that.

I just replaced that same piece. Totally gone. Removed it in 3 pieces. Look at RealOEM.com for the part numbers. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...89&hg=18&fg=20

That shows the assembly. I was able to reuse the bottom and the bolts. MINI of the Main Line shipped it to me for around $50. It took about 2 hours to replace it between analyzing it and actually getting the old bracket off. Use plenty of WD-40 on the bolts. Take the outside hanger bracket off with the rubber mount. That allows you to use your workbench to remove and replace the piece. The inside hanger is welded to the body so you have to remove the old piece with it attached to the car. I used some WD-40, a hair dryer to soften it up and a crow bar to force it out. Putting the new bracket on was less daunting. Good luck.

Oh, sorry about that. I actually did try to use some metal banding that I had lying around the garage, it held it up OK, but it still rattled. I'm the kind of guy that will always try to find another way of doing things, especially if it means I can avoid the dealer.

Geowit, you had to get pretty rough to get that out, did u have to reweld anything in, how the hell do you get the piece out of that rubber bushing. I prob should have figured this out before i lowered it, i can hardly move under there, and since im at school i dont hav my jack or jack stands, maybe i can find a crub i can get up on to raise it a bit. Thanks for all the feedback guys
