New to the forum and just got my new MINI

Hi All,
I just got my new Mini and I am new to the forum. Love my Mini.

I don't have a picture on a http// but do have it in a jpeg on my computer. Maybe someone can help me figure out how to upload it.

Plus, one thing I noticed with the Mini is sometimes, not always, when I start up the car it rattles like a Detroit Diesel. Then it goes away after a few moments of driving it. Is this going to hurt something? My dealer says it is a oil bubble and it will work out. But so far it has happened about 4 times.

Any help on this would be great.

Randy

I'm not sure if I'm talking about the same thing, but when I first start up Milly, she does seem to idle a bit more roughly than some of the other cars I've driven. I assume it's just because she is anxious to chew up some road, but welcome from a fellow newbie!

Welcome to NAM and your MINI. Is your MINI fresh off the boat new?

If so, you should not have any rattle from the engine. A light tap tap sound is normal for the direct injection on the engine, but not a rattle.

I would suggest you get another tech. to look and listen at your dealership. make sure you record each time you take the car back for this noise.

There is an outstanding issue with the MINI engine which has been discussed to the nth degree in other threads. Possible fixes do exist.

Now, pictures of your MINI.

Upload to your gallery and then link to it in a message when posting. Use the edit icon with the mountain symbol.

You need to capture the location of your image, so when in the gallery right click on your picture and capture the 'image location'. Use that to paste into the insert image dialog prompt.

I use picasa as my picture gallery, I have a picture being viewed. I right click on the picture and capture the image location. I click the mountain edit icon in this dialog, I paste I get a picture after this text.

Make sense?

Enjoy and have fun with your MINI.

Question for old81

I've read these threads for hours each day for the past 2 weeks (I know, get a life), but I haven't seen anything about engine issues. Can you be more specific? Which particular bulletin board and what should I search on? Thanks!

That noisy engine is what makes MINI a genuine MINI. You have the real thing!

Most of the noisy engine issues are attributed to the cold start chatter issue here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=130308 and here:http://www.motoringfile.com/2008/02/...issue-exposed/

The thread has it all, including vids to how the affected engines sound.

What the OP needs to tell us is if he has a Cooper or a Cooper S, because the cold start chatter affects the S only.

Otherwise, as old81 states there will be a unique tapping sound to the engine due to direct injection, which is entirely normal.

Thanks DrewN, you beat me to the answer. Good you provided direct links too.

I have about 15K on my 07, no issues. Every once in awhile I think I hear the cold start rattle, but I'm imagining it. My 07 is very solid.

Most noise I hear is when I start wearing out my tires and the roads are rough at VHS (very high speed).

Yep that's the rattle and thanks

Yes that is the rattle, following your links and reading the report accurately describes the cold start rattle. My dealer says she got a bullentin on it and she told me it was oil bubbles and would go away. I think it is more than that. I don't believe it is bubbles, but oil isn't getting into the proper area. My Z4 M Coupe makes a hell of a Vanos noise at about 3K RPM to 4KRPM and I'm told that is normal too.

So thanks for the info. I'll see how it goes. Got lots of warranty still on it.

Hey I just thought. What do you guys think of the armrest option for these cars? I sure would like one.

Hey I think I got a picture here of the car.

Go for a European armrest. Bigger, higher (I think), and it will hold a lot more stuff. Easy to self-install and available through MINI and a few aftermarket vendors on this site. A handful of threads cover this, along with installation instructions and pics.

I plan to go this route when my delivery date gets a bit closer.

welcome to the family. If your lucky, it's just a batch of bad gas, and with any luck, the engine will smooth out during the next tank.

Here you go:

http://www.outmotoring.com/mini-coop...h_storage.html

EDIT: Cheaper here. I've ordered from both Outmotoring and Minspeed and they are both awsome from my experience and well respected:

I got the armrest but it's a bit small and low - I'm short so I have my seat up pretty far - but better than nothing. My husband likes it. I wish I had waited and got an aftermarket one.

On the engine rattle at start up......Check out motoringfile.com. There is an article on this website dealing with issues of several MCS owners, having to replace heads and complete engines.
