R1R or RE01R

Om looking to get a set of dedicated autocross tires. Im looking for something sticky, but not in the R compound range. I filed it down to the new Toyo R1R and the Bridgestone RE01R. Anyone done a comparison of the 2. Ive heave the Bridgestones are great, but also heard good things about the new Toyos. These will be dedicated autocross tires, so noise, mileage etc. is not an issue.

How about Nitto NT-01? I suppose they do sort of fall under the "R-compound" rating but they are DOT approved. Competitively priced also. I got 225/45/17 from Discount Tire.

NT01 are rcomp. R1R, RE-01R and Direzza Star Spec Z1 are all gunning for the same thing....'street' tires that kill at autox. Tire Rack did testing on the two they sell and the Z1's come out on top and they're cheaper to boot (about teh same as the R1R's). What it comes down to is what sizes are available for your application (RE01R and Z1 don't do much below 17's).

I have personal experience with RE01R's in a 6sp Anniversary Miata with JR supercharger and of course my MINI. They are excellent and very forgiving.

thanks for the info, I have been leaning towards the re01r's for the simple fact is they have been out longer and been widely used and people seem to like them. The R1R's are brand new and havnt been tested much by the everyday autocrosser.

yes for a dedicated tire for autocross the re01r's are a good choice. They are very popular and seem to be the fastest in the street tire classes. The azenis would really be the other major choice in the street tire classes. If you are sticking with a stock class, you might look into a harder compound slick. You can still two or more years out of the harder slicks and sometimes can find these for not too bad of a price.

Just to add into the mix. You do realise the RE-01Rs have already been replaced by the RE-11. And Goodyear recently released the Eagle RS Sport.

+1 for the Direzza Star Spec Z1 if you can find a size you can work with.
215/40-17?

My current tires: RE-01R
My next tire: Z1

just to give you an idea about how wide RE01R's run.

stock size 205/45/17 RE01R's on 17x7.5 BBS on the right next to 225/45/16 Yokohama A048's on 16x7.5 SSR's (in my garage...the BBS set belongs to none other than Krut):

483FITTER, you must be Kyle

Judging by your performance at our last autocross, I'd say you're happy with the R1R's

I like the bridgestone tires! I don't have personally (I have Hankook RS2) but I have ridden in many a STi with them and they grip well! Don't expect a lot of life out of either though. My personal recommendation would be to get a set of Hankook RS2 tires FTW!

2 bits.

current top tier

RE-01R (and probably the RE-11 will be as good, we'll see)
Dunlop Z1

current top tier for cool, and wet only
Toyo R1R (I wish they'd finally release the 225/45-15)

current 2nd tier (they were top tier until this year)
Falken Azeni

close, but not top tier
Hankook RS-2

to make my point, on my car the Z1 consistantly generates 10% more lateral G in a 195/55-15 than the RS-2 in a 225/45-15. The Z1 compound is that much better.

cheers,

Charlie
