Can you hear the turbo more with the JCW Stage 1 Intake vs the Stock Intake

For those of you that have the stage 1 tuning kit. Can you hear the turbo more with the JCW intake than you did when it had the stock intake. If so how much? Thanks for the info

Yup, there is a bit more diverter valve "sneezing" on the overrun, however you still cannot hear much of the turbo itself. It's pretty much the same as stock with the windows up, and just a touch louder with the windows down. It's not a huge acoustic change, which can be a good thing for those not wanting to turn the Rice factor up to 11.

How about the power gains? Is there any?

With just the airbox? I haven't tested the difference, though the slightly changed velocity stack may help.

If you get the whole JCW Tuning Kit? Definitely; about 15wHP and 10wLbFt over stock. Most of the gain of the Kit is in the ECU flash.

I'm keen on the entire JCW Tuning kit. I for 1 am not a fan of loud exhausts.... or any exhaust. That being said, intake noise plus a little of the BOV PSSSST is a welcome.

You see, Mini tuners here are selling the JCW airbox and the JCW exhaust individually. But not the ECU flash. And i have been trying to bite the bullet and get the gruppeM intake for my R56.

I just wanted to see if the JCW would give me what the gruppeM could.

having driven both options here, the JCW is noisier, but I agree with Rye that it is the programming on the BOV, and exhaust, not the air box differences that are changing things.

If you WANT more noise any of the cold air open filament offerings (of course I like you to be interested in the ALTA !-) should accomplish what you want.

Let me know if I can help!

Would you say the power gains from an exhaust system be from the downpipe or the cat-back+muffler?

Sorry Adam, but with a CAI, i would personally opt for one that has heat shielding. Maybe i missed out on Alta's extensive explanation from post threads (they were kinda long) but with the air filter in the 'open' position, doesn't it suffer from heat soak? And say with the scoop open, the cooler external air would be heated as it passes the engine before entering the filter.....

now something just popped in my head, i do recall reading that the turbo heats up the air anyways.......

there it is.... i just confused myself.

Hey I TOTALLY understand and Jeff and agree that in THEORY the filter would need a ton more shielding etc. But the dyno doesn't lie. And not just ours, but the others out there as well that have tested it. The car makes more HP, and trq on the dyno with the hood shut.

There is cold air still fed to the filter by the OEM cold air tubing, and air must be flowing over and around to bathe the filter in cold air. If it DIDN'T then the gains wouldn't be there.

Again, I agree with your theory that it shouldn't work, but honestly it does!

You can check out some basic methodology on our website by clicking HERE

then on the charts tab!

Thanks again! Let me know if I can help in anyway on any product!

Adam,

I am interested in the CAI but my main concern is that there will be large increase in engine noise. Being somewhat old [44], I don;t wnat to have a "Fast and Furious" sounding car. I have seen videos on YouTube with the CAI installed but with the hood open and I have not been too enthused by the sound it makes. Is it somewhat more subdued in the cabin? Are there videos somewhere of the CAI in action under normal driving?

Thanks

thanks for asking! Any of the open filter intake systems like ours, will result in more noise from the induction side. MOST people do not find the sound to be anything other than pleasing, but to the extremely sensitive it may be offensive.

When you have your foot in it and you shift it will make a nice whoosh, phsstt sound. But in normal driving it makes no noise at all.

I hope that helps! Please let me know if I can help in anyway further!

just rip out the factory air box and throw on a k&n rx4990 you hear the turbo spool and the diverter valve pretty loud and its on 60 bucks it feels like it gets a good hp and torque gain
