R56 Are runflats more prone to screws/nails?
Are runflats more prone to screws/nails?
Is it just me or are RFs more prone to getting nails and screws then other tires? I drive in exactly the same areas as I have with my previous vehicle..a durango and my gf and her 2 brothers don't have issues with nails or screws. But, I have somehow picked up 3 screws in 5 months of owning my mini and they are all in different tires. I seriously hope this pace does not continue or I will be broke!
i did not know walmrt repair tires..
but good to know

Dynaplug and a cheapo compressor....
but if you have the new TPMS stay away from Slime....
Dynaplug works great on simple nail/screw type punctures.

Their website says Harbor Freight carries now - I saw it there once....

Well my first one was after 100 miles then 4k then 5k, thankfully I have only had to get one plugged and that was for free. The last one I got went in sideways into the sidewall area tread but I took it out without any leaks, hopefully when I go to work this morning I still have air haha. Damn those jealous drivers
I think since RFs are harder they make the nail/screw tip on its head and forces the nail in more then other tires just running them over. But I'm no expert

Slime now claims to be TPMS friendly. I carry both a Continental Tire ContiComfortKit, and a DynaPlug. However, my car is pre-TPMS.
TPMS is Tire Pressure Monitoring System, there are 2 different systems on the minis at some point it was changed.
I don't think the run flats are more prone to picking up screws or nails. They are just more expensive if you have to replace them. Some tire shops will refuse to plug a run flat but I have had success with the shops recommended by tirerack. Of course this may be just the excuse some are looking for to replace their runflats with conventional tubeless tires.
I have have been using the tire plug kit BMW motorcycles for 17 years and they work great but the dynaplug or similar tool is much easier then the bent metal plug tool.
IMHO keeping your tires properly inflated seems to help keep from getting up punctures.
My worst tire story is picking up a bolt in the sidewall of a tire two blocks from the tire shop that just put a new set on my car. The good news is the vendor replaced the tire at no charge.

The R56's system, that came before the law went into effect in Sept. 2007, was known as FTM (Flat Tire Monitor). It works by monitoring the rpm of each wheel and alerting when one wheel rotates at a different speed. There are no sensors in the wheels.
