The great thing about the standard key is it re-charges as you drive. No more batteries to replace in remote.

What do you mean by a 'normal key'? Did you order a cabrio (which I think still uses a real key), or an R56 which doesn't

I am not really sure I follow your question but the "normal" key is the actual key fob there is no conventional ignition switch in the MC or MCS.You place the key fob in the slot on the dash then press the start/stop button next to it.There is an actual key inside the key fob that you can take out to unlock the drivers door (only exterior door lock on the car) passenger door and hatch locks, roll down the windows, unlock the fuel door and tilt up the sunroof with it or lock the doors, lock the hatch, lock the fuel door, close the windows and close the sunroof (<---if you ordered that option).

The key fob is the same shape in the regular start or Comfort Access.
Internal battery charging is the only difference.

As noted, the back of the fob has a silver button you'd click to release the key(looks like regular key) for manual use.

Slip the key fob into the key slot, press the Start button, while depressing the clutch(if stick), and away you go. I'm still impressed, two months after delivery.

Do the comfort access keys recharge then? I have c.a. and have been putting my key in the ignition on occasion so it does not die. Have I been wasting my time?

Yup. Convenient Access keys have a removable backplate, and don't recharge when you put them in the ignition. When they start to die, you just replace the battery.

See the attachment for the section of Page 25 referring to the key's battery.

IIRC i read in the manual that the convenient access keys also recharge. just to make sure they don't die they recommend to put it in the slot at least 2 times a year
