Depending on who you are, driving a MINI Cooper can telegraph a vibe of either arrogance or cuteness.

I've had my mini for about 4 months now, every single compliment I've gotten from all my friends has involved the word "cute". All the comments I receive from people I dont know involve the word "mpg".
MINI Cooper (urban dweller)
You've got the haircut, the clothes, a taste for obscure bands and obscure coffee blends. What car could possibly make the cut in that hip dictatorship you call a neighborhood?
MINI Cooper (suburban dweller)
"Oooh, honey, isn't that just the cutest thing?"
------
I think my dumpy town is pretty much one giant suburb. The actual downtown area with real buildings is only about 4x4 city blocks big. I'm as far from being a hipster as possible. I like hawaiian shirts, I wear geariatric sneakers for walking comfort, and I didn't even drink coffee for the first time until last year in Japan - it came from a can. My taste in music is very obscure though. At any rate, I find my car irresistibly adorable and cute.

Arrogance or cuteness, I'll take arrogance. Some of my friends have called it cute, then I mentioned my top speed, that stopped the cute stuff. I like to emphasize its bulldoggedness.
The article, with its dichotomy between urban and suburban (and neglecting rural altogether) missed the MINIuniversality of the owners.
But what the heck, in so many ways, it is cute and cool, way cool.

I've gotten tons of comments from friends and random onlookers and I haven't gotten "cute" once. What I do hear again and again is . . . . "cool!!", which is fine with me.
My extremely uncool ex-husband saw my new MCS for the first time a couple of weeks ago and said, predictably, "Oh, you finally got the clown car you always wanted." I gave a pleasant smile, said nothing, and remembered that that comment is simply reason #127 why he's my EX-husband.

Clothes. There's black. And then there's black.
Mmmmm. Coffee.
Groooovy. Music.
I may resemble these remarks.
I receive more questions about top end and mpg than comments about cuteness. It is amazing to me how many people have told me that they have always wanted a Mini. And, yes, I am sure that some people would call me arrogant but it is more fun than my wife's Caddy STS.
