"black-out" campaign

OK, just got the new "club" this past week and I am already getting into some changes. I am on a black out campaign to get rid of all the chrome on the outside of the car. I have already ordered Alta's upper and lower black grills, now I need to get rid of the rest:
  • door handles
  • rings around the headlights
  • rear door handles
  • "vent" style thingy up above the front tires
can anyone point me in the right direction to get some of these items to replace the chrome.

Also am I missing anything that can be blacked out?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I don't know if you can use the blackout idea on the Convenience Access door handles.

Do a search here and you'll find a great blog, with pics, on swapping out the barn door handles for black ones.

Me, too...

So far I've done the grill, headlights, rear door handles, gas cap. Next is beltline tape, badges, lettering, side "vents", then someday door handles .
Rear door hadles I got from Lyles, headlight & Grill from Minspeed ( http://www.minspeed.net/products.php?cat=47 ), tape from outmotoring (they now have RED black-out tape and I'm trying to decide how to use that - helps if your clubbie is red though ), and will probably be painting the badges/letters myself & maybe the side vents.
Check my previous posts for more info... and see my gallery for some pix...

Good Luck!!

Just take them off.....100 times cleaner than painting them and re-installing

Someone should try "RED"ing out a red car rather than blacking it out. Blacking it out doesn't seem to solve the problem that the chrome causes. The idea behind blacking something out is to make it more subtle than the flashy chrome.....but a giant black door handle on a nice smooth red door panel is just as disruptive to the flow as the chrome handle was. You're still stuck with a busy body panel.....making them red would cure that whole solution and give you a very clean look. It seems like people are just blacking out bright color cars now because everyone else is doing it.

thats a good idea, problem would be the red has to exactly the same color as the car and I don't know if we could find a painted piece of plastic that will be that close (I haven't looked so I don't know). But yes that would look better at cleaning it up..

Lyle at Vinyl styles has a vinyl that is an exact match to Chili Red....I used to own a chili red car and I was the one that did all the testing for him. He can wrap all your handles and stuff. Here's a comparison:

And drewster had lyle wrap his grille surround and headlights in the chili red vinyl

I too think that blacking out the handles and rings may be a little too "much" as far as contrast goes.

I'm working with Lyle on getting a vinyl to match the mellow yellow to do my handles front & rear as well as my headlight rings. To me it would visually make the headlights appear smaller and blend the handles in, rather than making them stand out even more.

The sample color is on it's way so hopefully it will match. If not, then the black is always a second choice.

I've done my grill (JCW) and since mine's a JustACooper, the scuttles are already black. Getting the beltline tape from Lyle as well.

Either way you go, I'm sure it will look great!

Hi Gang,
This seems to be an neverending battle. I really like the blackout look, But I think my car is getting to busy looking. I did the belt line from lyle, and minspeed painted my headlight rings, plus they painted the chrome part chili red on new JCW scuttles. I have been pondering on what to do with the four door handels, I thought about introducing another color(besides the chili red and black) Now I am thinking of taking the viper stripes off.
All that is definite is, is that I am confussed.
But the car still looks good...........
Larry

Well, the Mellow Yellow vinyl is too yellow. I started another thread about carbon fibre/fiberglass handle covers if you're interested.
