I have a prototype Neuspeed exhaust on my Cooper. The big question for me is how this will affect the visual inspection part of a california smog check. Do I need an O.E. number or is an aftermarket exhaust ok in C.A.R.B's eyes?

Why not ask Aaron Neuman? They've been in the tuning business for ages and know all the ins and outs of being CARB exempt.

HTH,

I dont think an aftermarket exhaust will affect smog or CARB. I was cited for an intake but my magnaflow exhaust was OK. I passed a smog check with the exhaust too. I think the only law about exhaust is the decibel level of the exhaust.

I agree with rfibanez, minus one exception that I recently learned here in CA. With an exhuast such as SuperTrapp, it will be a no go... If interested here is a relatively short thread on M2:

And it's just not CA... Just an fyi.

NONONONO

my plan for ca smog inspection of the regular supertapp is to have an extra end cap with a hole in it just large enough for the inspection probe. i'll either buy the supertrapp end cap with a hole 404-4075 or make my own. i'll cover the hole with a small sheet metal panel held in place with 2 sheet metal screws or plug it with a stainless hole plug. removing 1 screw at the station will allow the patch to be pivoted or I'll pry out the hole plug.

i'll just use this end cap for inspections.

Our paths cross again

As I shared, that is a novel idea. But with the inspector I chatted with, if he can't get that flexible rod all the way in (to hold it in place) - and that is a foot or so, he cannot measure the emissions...

If I'm visualizing the end cap with hole that I think you mean, that will only buy you and a couple inches maybe? I was thinking of putting on an extension as that guy did for his Z3 (link provided in the M2 thread above) and that is a few inches - not deep enough for the probe...

Also, if you put that end cap on (with hole), won't you still have exhaust exiting out of the sides prior to it - from the discs in place? Now if you are saying taking the discs all out, with end cap in place, then YES. That must be what you mean, right?

look at pictures of the supertapp disks. they are really rings with large openings in their centers. the core also has a large central opening.

with a hole in the end cap, the whole length of the supertrapp is available. whether i buy the standard sp cap with a hole in the center or make an offset hole will depend on the inspection shop i go to. i've seen probes that have a clip thing along side the probe to hold them onto the pipe and others that are just straight and lay inside the pipe.

Just to clarify, the guys at Nuespeed said the exhaust was smog legal. However it was never mass produced, so I don't know if they went to the effort of ensuring that it really was. Further, I don't know if there are any requirements for me to provide a CARB exept document or an O.E. number when getting smogged. I guess my question would be, what would make an aftermarket exhuast illegal?

As far as emissions go, the catback of choice should not be an issue. However, given the above, if something in the exhasut impedes them from testing your car's emissions, then that would not be good. Other than that, the sound level is a topic for which the law does address in many states... but not a smog station concern.
