R50/53 Q regarding cabin air filters
Q regarding cabin air filters
It seems many different sites carry cabin air filters. Prices range from $12.50 to an astronomical $58 (Mini Mania). I understand there is a regular and carbon activated cabin filter.
My question is, does any one know what brand the OEM standard filter is?
BECK/ARNLEY
BOSCH
WIX
Thanks.

Don't know the answer to your question but I want to add one too it. So "what is the stock cabin air filter?" and what is the typical service recommendation for them on the MINI's? Honda calls for 30K but I've seen people blow through them faster.

auto a/c gets carbon activated filter, regular a/c just gets paper
but as far as I can tell they are all the same size, for all years (so far)
according to the service manual it should be checked at every oil change which means the dealer does it - yea, right.
Here's mine when I finally looked

Here'd my DIY for the 07....the 02 is almost exactly the same. A five minute job that reqires no tools. There's a black box under the glove box. Pop the bottom cover off and pull out the filter. Change when it grosses you out

By the way, where is this filter located in the car? Does anyone have a thread that tells this info?
Like I said....
A black plastic box under the glove box......
3M? Got a part number stamped on it? I can look it up at work and see what it is. I wonder if it's part of our Filtrete lineup.
THE dealer VS MY dealer
My dealer, and I've been an owner since 02, has yet to even look at it....that's covering two dealers.
It has the 3M logo as well as the MINI logo/emblem on it. Please let us know what price these are going for. I'd be interested to see. RockAuto carries 4 different cabin air filters. All of which are fairly priced.
Thanks.
Thanks for the info. I do appriciate it...
I'll have to dig a little at work. That looks like the BMW part number and not the 3M ID. This week I'll pull mine and see if I can see any other numbers. Sometimes the auto parts are hard to cross reference in our system. If i find anything I'll post back.
No need to go cross eyed trying to find a 3m at a good price, the name brand charcoal cabin filters perform as well or better than stock. If anything I think you may gain at least 2 maybe 3 horsepower!!!!
I found a little info at work today. Looks like 3M is using the same technology they use for furnace filters to make the cabin air filters. I know the Filtrete brand filters are very nice and quite a bit of engineering goes into the products. If it was the difference of a couple bucks to get an OEM replacement I personally would do it. YMMV.
Filtrete™ Cabin Air Filters from 3M use the same technology as Filtrete
furnace filters. Both contain electrostatically charged filter media with
both positively charged and negatively charged fibers.
Filtrete cabin air filters help capture dust, pollen and other particles
from the air passing through the filter into your car's interior and are
designed to help eliminate particles measuring 5 microns or more in
diameter and 50% of smaller particles and odors caused by gaseous
pollutants from the air entering the passenger compartment.
