Debates about HID kits for mc w/out stock xenons
Hi everyone.
I have read, i believe all the threads here about the mini coopers that didn't come with the already installed hid kits from the factory, the threads where it's stated to not not place kits on them (like mine's a 2003) because it's difficult of where to place them because of the space. THEN because of the glare it will be causing.
Basically there was more negative than positive in regards to placing xenon headlights and kits for the <2005 mini coopers.
In one thread i read about OEM projector headlamps.
Now does OEM mean factory? Does this mean that these projectors would work with the halogen bulb?
I also read that the projector headlamps are more for look than performance and gives off bad lighting.
Basically, I really want to change my yellow headlights and if even possible, my headlamps.
IF i am NOT advized to bother installing the upgrade hid kit, or simply place the hid bulbs in it, what on earth can i do?
Can i use the projector headlamps? What types of bulbs can i use other than the factory one's?
Thank you for your time.

there are two types of HID headlamps that came with MINIs. One is the projector style that came out in 2005. 2002-2004 models have a Reflective HID headlamp. Both are HID but simply use different methods to project the lighting, and they each use a different type of bulb. HIDs do not give off poor lighting. The only projector that does, are ones that use a projector lens but are designed for standard halogen bulbs, not HID bulbs. The correct way to get HID lights on your non-equipped MINI is to simply purchase a set of OEM HIDs either new or used. and install them. A few people on these forums have done this very thing.
Also, be weary of headlamps you see on eBay that offer *HID* projectors, they are simply halogen projectors that include a cheap HID "kit" to give off the blueish color, and lots of blinding glare.
PS- I have a set of 04 xenons for sale in the marketplace if u decide to go with the OEM route.

I'd recommend spending some time at hidplanet.com/forums in the HID University section to get an understanding of why a kit in a halogen housing is a BAD IDEA.
I had an HID 'kit' in my Accord's halogen housing and it was splotchy (poor light distribution) and a lot of glare (more light than the housing could handle, so there were ghosts of light that can distract other drivers).
I took them out and never looked back, and am glad that xenon is an option with the MINI because I was planning on getting OEM HID in my next car, even if it meant retrofitting projectors in.
