Re-setting OBC reading - Can it be done?

I am one of those people who follow the recommended service instruction. It has been a year since I purchased my MINI new. I got my oil changed by the dealership. The OBC indicates "count down" as I start the engine. The current milage is approx 14000. The current "count-down" reading is 3800 - 02/2009. Is there any way I can personally re-set the reading? Was the dealer supposed to re-set? Or, just leave it as is.... I hope the car will not beep once it hit "0". This car makes a lot of noise for everything.....

It doesn't beep and yes you can reset it. Do a quick search for "reset oil" or something to that effect and you should find the instructions. Why the instructions aren't stickied is beyond me. It's a daily question here.

don't reset it

as long as the car is covered you don't want to reset the counter yourself. Maint plan will change the oil when the computer says and/or at 12 months.

Even tho the computer will say change your oil next at what seems like a short interval, let it be. They'll change it again. Second and third changes on my 02 were weeks apart. It seems dumb I agree but here's their logic.

The dealer probably did the oil ONLY and did not do anything else that they would check at a computer dictated service interval - at least that's what they told me on my 02. While not significant at the first computer interval (oil service on the GEN1), the second time around this is INSPECTION when they are supposed to check a bunch of stuff. Your reseting the computer can cause you to miss these inspections "when they should have happened" because on a GEN1 anyway the reset procedure doesn't just reset the miles to go, but also toggles the notice for what type of inspection/service is required. They won't do these based just on time/age or on pure mileage, they want to see that counter go to ZERO.
