Now here is a totally new concept. Hubby has been pouring over that blasted accessory catelog for his new Mini. (Note to self: shoot salesman who slipped him that one.) This darlin man had the gumption (or whatever ya call them major parts) to state with a straight face that he just HAD to order oodles of goodies to make his car look good in order for it to "accentuate MY natural beauty while I was riding in it!!!" That settles it -- he can't get the car because it's built too low to drive thru bull manure that deep!

quite cheesy of the salesman... but it sounds as if he's trying to excite your husband to realize the potential for his MINI

oh.. and increasing his gross profit!

If I were you, spend your aftermarket dollars on aftermarket companies who spend time, money and effort creating products for us. The dealer is already getting his.

Sorry to say that the MINI accessory booklet is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to adding to the car.
Worse is looking at the sponsor directory on MCO and going through each site with oodles of MINI things to add.

One approach (is he reading this?) is to agree to a budget every year and within the budget he can get whatever but because there is a budget then he will have to be picky about how to do the upgrades and such.

This is quite a rational approach. It really is a good idea to have a limit and a big plan. Otherwise it is very easy to get carried away and out of control.

As for adding to the car with MINI add ons- just ask yourself what the add on will do to help make the car better?
Is it something you really need or not.

Here's what I did. (Is he reading this???) Buy the car first and then add on extras by buying them as parts with a 10 or 15% discount using the BMW Car Club of America membership discount. Dues are $33 a year. The other side of the coin is anything that is added to the car from the dealership at the time of purchase is covered under 4 year warranty. My adds ons after the purchase are not so covered.

I'd keep your husband away from MCO and hog it all for yourself if I were you.

Aloha, ticketgtr!
You better be careful or your husband will end up like minihune. I think he's approaching, if not beyond, the $10K mark

If you search enough around MCO, you may be able to confuse him with the need to rearch which mod he may want or which would be better. If, for example, you can distract him with the "Borla vs Magnaflo" thing, you could buy a bit of time...however this will just slow down...not stop...his obsession. My MC is unmodded, and I'm quite content with the car the way it is. You might suggest he drive his MINI awhile first before deciding on specific mods....see what the car's capabilities are, then make his decisions. Is the prozac not working?????

Actually I just re read the warranty statement on accessories, can't remember where, but it states that the best time to add acccessories is before taking delivery, as you say, but it also says that if you add it to the car later, it's covered until the end of the existing warranty, or up to 1 year whichever is greater.

I know how you both feel. I should be in my MC by the end of the month, but I've already amassed a little collection of goodies. In my case, I had to take advantage of **special offers** and impossible to miss deals.

For instance, a friend of mine was selling his CVT MC and upgrading to an S, so he sold me his Moss MINI Rally lights and his Alpine CD Changer and Blitzsafe adapter for cheap. I also bought from GotMINI.com their elbow rest for $50 which looks identical to MiniManias $150 elbow rest. A special July 4 offer for a custom Whalen Shift Machine *****, a Cargo Net on clearance from MiniCooperParts.com. I'm still deciding on who's Viper stripes I'm going to buy from.

Future additions will be the S cap, S Side skirts, chrome door inserts, chrome mirrors, white side indicators, and more graphics. These are all things I can live without for now. Oh yeah, I'll be getting an aftermarket alarm installed from a friend who've I done business with for the past 25 years, and is handy for helping me install my accessories like the Moss MINI Rally lights for a few bucks, as well, which will come sooner rather than later.

Also will add a hand free kit for my cell phone. The list is endless. I guess my point is to prioritize what you can live with and what you can't. Factor in any conditions on safety versus purely for looks. I feel some of these things like the Chrome mirror caps and Chrome Door cups will be perfect additions after the car has some scratches to make them look new again.

Btw, I completely love your posts, they are so entertaining and I can so relate to them!

Richard

It doesn't sound like you are too sensitive to his needs as a male. My fiance understands I cannot leave anything alone and as long as I don't go too crazy she's ok with it. How would you like it if he decided he just had to have a 24 year old completely impractical vehicle that didn't even run for a toy.And then pour thousands into it to make it roadworthy. Then take it apart just for the fun of it.Build it it's own garage , wash it every time it comes home. Now that would be worse wouldn't it? I did just that, not with my mini but my landcruiser, and she still loves me.

I still maintain that this is a sane approach. Maybe learned by making the mistake of not having spending limits as in my case.
So consider the suggestion a sound one.

Budget limits? Now that would have been a good idea about 6 months ago. Fortunately I am running out of things to do.

For MCS owners the sky is the limit, $10K or $15 is easy to reach depending on which things you choose. If you do the math it all adds up quickly.
Just be careful or you'll end up like many of us Miniacs. That's where the budget comes in.

Would you raise a kid w/out buying it new clothes and school supplies? Of course not!! It's simply a matter of deciding what looks best for the MINI. Of course practicality and necessity should not be found in the same sentence as accessories, just as new shoes, purses, hats, etc. are not requirements for a fullfilled life. Or are they??
