Im not sure what they were but they had two strips on the front and one long one on the back.. looks factory.. Any idea?

Also, are the HID headlamps from 2002-2004 interchangeable with the HID from 2008? I like the fluted look of the lense in the earlier style

No....they are very different. The shape and size are very different and they changed the mounting method and location as well.

I think that you are talking about the chrome bumper insterts from 02-04. (see photos) You would need a Cooper (justacooper) front and rear bumper covers for these to fit on your 08. I don't think that there was an 04 Cabrio so the retro fit of the bumper covers may be an issue. Although, I think that the late 04 Cooper bumper covers are interchangeable with 05-06. So it may work on the 05-08 cabrios. Again, you may have to find a club that is having a tech day and see if someone is willing to pull the cover off and see. It's actully very easy- less than 12 screws I think.

Otherwise, they will not attach to the bumper of any 05-08 anything.

Sorry, never pulled the rear off, but couldn't be that hard. The front is very easy, #20 Torx driver and a philips head screw driver is all that is needed.
