Drivetrain Legal Intake ???
Hi. just bought MCS last week and through reading here wanted to add after market intake. I'm new to the after market thing and am learning a great deal here. I tried searchin for thread but no luck. could anyone tell what intakes are street legal in SoCal (ie alta, pilo, etc) I see that the monster is not. any help would be greatly appreciated
I have the moss mini intake and that wasn't legal, mr officer didnt like that at all. Long story short, they made me take it out.
Your best bet for a carb legal intake would be K&N and AEM, they're usually the only companies that have carb approved intakes. Don't wait for the pilo, alta, mania intakes to get carb approved becuase it ain't gonna happen.

I called K&N yesterday and asked them if their intake came with a CARB sticker. Unfortunately, I was told that they have discontinued their intake for the MINI. They said that they had found that it didn't produce much, if any HP gain. (I was surprised, most vendors would just sell the product, and let you imagine that you feel some improvement.)
So, I called AEM and asked them if their intake came with a CARB sticker. I was told that it does not! This isn't what I expected, since I'd heard here that they were CARB approved, but this is right from the horse's mouth.
That leaves me wondering... has anyone in California *actually* gotten an intake with a CARB sticker? If so, who did you get it from. I'd like to add a few easy horses, but I don't want to have to swap back to my stock intake for every smog inspection.

I do not think any are CARB approved.
Come smog test time the car might pass emission standards, but will flunk visiual.
So you'll have to play the switch-a-roo game.

I just read an ad in the October of European Car Magazine for the AEM. AEM claims that they are either CARB certified or in the process of getting certified on all their systems. So maybe there is hope for us with the California plague.

Funny, I emailed an AEM distributer about both AEM intakes about 6 weeks ago and was told that AEM decided not to release either intake system for the Cooper S.
Does anyone know if they are making the short one?

God, I can not imagine living somewhere where the government tells me what I can and can not do to a freeking car. This must be what it is like living under a tyrant. No wonder Ca. is in such a mess. I would advise you to move, move as quickly as you can. Discover freedom.

California is free compared to the UK. If you read any of their posts those guys have to tell their insurance company about any modifications like intakes, brakes, lights, wheels and tires (tyres).
Move? I don't think so. I'll keep my wonderful weather, and I'll take my chances with earth quakes. You can have the hurricanes in the south and southeast, the grey snow in the greatlakes, the tornadoes in the plains states.
You folks from the UK - chime in anytime. Add your 2 pence

Don't forget lights-free Friday evenings here in the lovely North East.
We KNOW it was a conspracy thought up by Arnold to get more people to move to the state to vote for him.
Of course, I would do it because I heard Warren Buffet only pays $2500 or so in property taxes on his $2.5 MILLION dollar house in California. Now I would have to drive my car to Vegas for inspection once a year, but that would be worth it.
Hell, for the money I would save in property taxes, I could almost buy a new MINI every year. The dealers DO put a one year inspection on the cars in Ca., don't they?
Signed,
grumbly East Coaster, tired of sitting in the dark and paying for it.
PS, do you know my electric bill came the day of the black out?!?
The issue of legal vs. illegal vehicle modifications is a bipartisian issue, and one that exists in several states.
So..... I'd still like to hear if anyone has any infomation on intakes that are, or will soon be, legal in California and/or other states.
If you want to discuss Calirfornia recall politics, or California vs. the rest of the world, go ahead and start a thread. I'll gladly chime in on those topics there.
