Alta and supercharger questions

alright. so, i was thinking that i need more horsepower in my S. i did some research and came up with "for the money" my vest bet is some new pulleys...
i want to get the Alta 2.0 pulley. not sure what percent though. i'm thinking 17%? eh? also the lightened pulleys. anyone have the pulleys and how much difference did they make?

oh and how hard was the pulley installation? you've got to pull the engine right?

anyone have a pulley tool they wanna sell me?

thanks!

You don't have to pull the motor. 17% is fine for street use and track if you want a little extra power over a 15%.

You don't have to pull the engine; you have to lift it about 6 inches however. Also, the "15%" pulley size is the best overall; you will not heat soak the intake system on the track, won't overrev the blower [which rips the coating off the rotors], and you only give up about 3HP over a 19%, which as I found out is horrid for track-work and killed the coating on my old blower rotors.

17% Alta

I have and R53 ~ and currently running a 17% Alta Pully. Awesome power, no lag in first gear either. I would recomend that you purchase the appropriate size belt and not use the OEM one. This will prevent belt slippage. They are about 22 buck for the right belt.

Sorry about the necro bump, but anything over ~10% will spin the blower past it's maximum stated RPM

you are wrong actually. 15% barely go over the limited rpm on the supercharger. about 100 or 200 or so if i remember correctly.
And that is of course you do rev it to the very end to the limiter.
so if you don't bounce off rev limiter, you will never hit or go pass the maximum rev on the supercharger.

There is an article on a comparison of pulley's (15, 17 and 19) on a R53 MCS in the previous issue of Modern MINI magazine. With no additional mods other than just the pulley, they found the only way to go would be the 15. The 17% pulley generate more heat and effectively only made the same horsepower and torque as the 15%. the 19% actually made less horsepower and torque and lowered the red line.

However, future articles will continue the comparison with the inclusion of other mods also.

The comparison was done on the same car so it sounds fairly scientific.

So if you plan on making any other mods right away, the 15% is probably the way to go...according to this article.

I just put a 15% in from Webb Motorsports. One immediate thing I notice is the take off from a dead stop is much much better. You will have to lift the motor. Not hard just takes a little while for the first time.

15% is a nice bump.

Yes, you have to lift the motor some, with a floor jack underneath is the most common way.

If you want either an ALTA or a MINI Madness one, and don't feel like doing the install, either of them will do it for you (for a price of course). I see that you are in the area based on your location show.

An intake would be the logical next modification. Or, perhaps before it.
