Does anybody know what i should do? Sat night i went to a party...party ended and every1 went to slepp. i woke up and my wallet and car keys had been stolen!!! So now this punk who ever it is, has my house keys, car keys and my f***ing address!!! been hiding the car in the garage when ever im home but its not ideal! Does anybody knowwhat i should do? Ive been told its around £600 to change the locks...does any1 have any other ideas???

 

Oh, MAN. That's horrible! I don't know what to tell you, other than to suggest that you should at least report it to the police. I assume you cancelled credit cards and so forth?

 

yeah ive cancelled all my cards, its just such a ball ache! i now have to apply for a new driving license, pay £600 to cahgne my acr locks, pay about £50 to change the house locks, buy a steering lock, make sure my car is in the garage at all times if im not using it! im soooo mad! cheers for your reply though.

 

Just wondering if your (or owner of house where you were) homeowners insurance would cover theft and rekeying of locks. Maybe at least of your house, but maybe even the car. Just a thought. Some people have no respect for others and what they have worked hard to get. I would be rekeying everything, otherwise I'd be standing in my garage with my .40 S&W.

it wasnt my place it was my mates house. and his parents told him no1 was aloud in so there is no chance of claiming off their insurance! i ws sat at my living room window nearly all night making sure nobody came near the garage!! just cant beleive some1 has the nerve to do this! dont realise how import our cars are to us!!!

 

112, sometimes homeowners or renters insurance WILL cover your stuff if it's lost or damaged elsewhere. (Here, at least. Don't know if it's any different in the UK.)

Donna - i havent phoned the police yet, im unsure what to say to them! they are going to ask loads of question which i cant answer! lol. Like where i was, i know the area but not the adress. Who was there..i have no idea i only knew about 5 of them. Any also, the lad whos house we were at will get killed by his rents if the police turn up at his house!!

 

Your dealer will be able to re-code the car to not recognize the keyless entry and the immobilizer chip in your missing key, but it's best that you get the car re-keyed as well so those that have your key can't simply unlock your car and go through it's contents or have it towed.

 

112, that really sucks, sorry to hear!
I'd at least get a club or steering wheel locking device on your car asap, maybe borrow one from a friend for a few days, until you can get the car re-keyed!
Then all the usual: file police report, get house re-keyed and car re-keyed.

Im gonna have to phone the police now, if i leave it too long it will look dodgy!!

Sorry to hear about that.
The first thing I would have done was to call the police, when ever I woke up. That
way you can make insurance claims. No report = no claim.
Bite the bullet and change everything. Locks, credit cards, bank accounts, car key. You can get reembursed from insurance.
How did you get separated from your wallet and keys? Did you take your pants off?
When I go to a party I normally keep my clothes on asleep or awake. Unless we are alone and they suggest I take them off<LOL>

I didnt have any pockets as i was wearing shorts. so i had been holding onto the all night where ever i went...then when i fell asleep i put them next to me. when i woke up they had gone. I have spoke to the police there is nothing they can do :evil: not impressed! they arent even interested that some1 has my wallet (therefore my address) and keys to my house and car!
I have cancelled all my cards anyway, but i cant afford to change the locks and i cant claim on my insurance as i will lose my no claims bonus! will cost me laods next year, way more than 600!

 

Don't know what else to add, save to say good luck getting all the keys changed asap.

I'd keep the lights on outside the house as to see anyone snooping around.

ARGH!!! What is the friggin' point of insurance!!! It's certainly the biggest world-wide scam of the last 100 years. That, and Celine Dion's career.
Anyhow, 112, I had a similar thing happen to me and almost a week after the party I got an apologetic call from some girl who discovered my keys in her bag. In a semi-drunken stupor she unwittingly tossed my stuff into her bag. So here's hoping you get a phone call.

 

This is just me, but before I had my locks rekeyed, etc, I would kind of go with StovePipe on this one. Wait a little while before you have this done. Talk to your friend (the host or hostess) and see if someone may have taken them by mistake. Oh, and don't buy a steering wheel lock, they are weak. Buy a barke lock. The brake is the strongest part of the car, and this device is MUCH more reliable than a steering wheel lock. A good thief can saw through a steering wheel lock in under 5 minutes.

NEWSFLASH! - my wallet has turned up, however the keys are still missing! but this means that the person who stole the keys doesnt have my address...so my car is safe for now!!!

Im still a bit unsure though because it cant be that hard to track down a mini in coventry, UK...were not he biggest city in the world! and the amonth of driving i do i get spotted everywhere! Im just gonna have to try that brake lock cabbagetoe suggested! ill pop to the shop as soon as my credit cards come back!!

I would still cancel all your credit cards and get new ones - this is free as the credit card companies are more then happy to help ensure your cards aren't being used by anyone other then you...it is a bit of pain but worth it...i'm not sure where your wallet turned up but I've heard of people stealing wallets and then "helping them to turn up a day later" only after they have copied the cards using a palm reader and writer (similar to the ones hotels use for the card keys)...this way they hope the people don't cancel the cards as quickly.

 

Really?? i didnt know you could do that. The cards are cancelled anyway, i did it the day after and nobody had used them at that point so im safe! Cant beliee people are that sneaky nower-days!!
No your right Zanthus, it takes me ages to get to bed now coz i have to move my mums and step dads car out the way...put mine in the garage and put theirs back so it litterally is stopping me sleeping at night! lol

 

Any one have any ideas on who i should contact to get a new spare key cut?? I bought my car direct from BMW coz i work for them so i dont have a dealer as such. Think i should go to my local dealer???

Sounds kind of like "Trainspotting." I think the dealer should be able to reprogram your key so that the car would not function with the old code and key. It is worth asking them.
