All of the Mini Cooper's have the red lens on the top of the tach but it is only functional with the optional factory installed alarm system.

yup, part of factory alarm, crack it open and put a low voltage led in there, just as good in some neighborhoods

With the factory alarm installed the red light has this eerie, brightening and dimming glow to it once you arm it, it looks awesome at night (although I got it mainly for insurance and peace of mind purposes).

That sounds awesome.

So an alarm installed from the dealership won't do the dimming thing?

That's a good question, actually. I wouldn't see why not if it's OEM.

...That LED is definitely on my list of things to track down. I imagine it's "owned" by some part of the existing computer system, and the alarm, when installed, tells it to do its think when the engine is off and the doors are locked. It would be nice to have wiring diagrams for this beast!

I got my alarm installed when I shipped the car back from Germany -- about six months after I took receipt of it...so yes? A dealer-installed alarm should be able to do it...

It's pretty cool. My '04 had the alarm "red light" on the end of the wiper control shaft. Not as visually cool as this...

It really DOES look like those things (not trying to spell it!) from Battle Star Galactica...except slower...like KIT from Knight Rider!

Wouldn't it be awesome if you could make it do that?? (and by that I mean the cylon side to side red glow) I think it would look cool if it were to dim and reappear from time to time.

or maybe I'm just a big Battlestar Galactica nerd.

There's three LEDs in there. When first armed all three pulse slowly. After sixteen minutes the center LED flashes intermittently.

(The pulsing does look really cool)
