Finding the Model in Demand
There are even message-board tips about finding a Mini Cooper, currently the Holy Grail among car shoppers. BMW, maker of the Mini, is limiting the supply, shipping only 25,000 Minis a year to the United States from England, where they are built. That is allowing many dealers to continue charging the sticker price and is keeping inventories to a bare minimum.
Looking for a blue Mini Cooper, but refusing to pay full price, Jason Wong of Queens called dealers on Long Island, where he works as an accountant, and then in Manhattan. None had one in blue and none were offering discounts. He widened his search to Westchester County and landed a Mini for $500 off the sticker price with free floor mats to boot. The entire transaction took five days. "It was a good deal, and I didn't have to wait for my car," he said.

 We can only hope that the person that was lucky enough to get such a good deal, is on this forum and won't be shy about telling us their experience...

Actually, as the new model year draws closer I think you'll start hearing about more of these deals as dealers feel they need to move the cars before the '04's come out. While there are some dealers who've got a limited inventory, others are coming to the realization that they have too many '03's that will immediately lose value when the new ones show up.
Well, while my deluding myself, you can say that I paid less than MSRP for my MCS.
The conversation went like this:
Me: So, you can order me a MCS and ship it to AZ?
Dealer: Yes, no problem.
Me: What do you think shipping will cost me?
Dealer: I just shipped a car to SoCal for $800 so it should be a little less than that.
Me (in an obvious dreamstate): Can you could ship it using the normal amount paid for shipping.
Dealer: We can't do that. (Yes... I knew the answer to that one before I asked. It was a setup for the next question.)
Me: I was hoping to limit my shipping to $500. If we can do that, I'll do the deal.
Dealer: Yes, we can do that.
Me: Let's do it.
That literally took 2 minutes. Maybe I could have done a little better but... hindsight is always 20/20.
From there, it was just mundane details of faxing forms back and forth.
The shipping came to just a tad over $830 so the dealer reduced MSRP by $330 and I paid the shipping directly to the shipper.
We fax forms back and forth and the dealer never collected a deposit. When the MCS came in, we completed the transaction, it was shipped to me and it included floormats at no charge. (Assuming full MSRP less $330 doesn't somehow cover that cost. )
Now, I'm not delusional but I got the MCS the way I wanted it without an unreasonable delay or additional cost. Yeah... I paid a few more $$$ to have it shipped here to AZ but it was worth it. Worth every penny.
AND, I got a hole boatload of friends here at no additional charge...what a deal!

Well, there's only one MINI dealer in Westchester County...so perhaps we should ask our resident Trooper/Motoring Advisor. He works there (or right next to there, depending on the story of the day

>>Hey, Doesn't Antsmini work there? Hey Ant is this true or was it written during the Times infamous "make it up" era of the last few months?
It is true, all of our 2003 MC, and MCS are going for $500 below list. Only two MC and four MCS left, will be here in a few weeks. Make way for 2004!
