Yep. Same problem because the engines are the same.

yes, but one would hope this was already sorted out in an engine that at this point is almost 2 years on the market.

Update: Since this story was written last week, we’ve been touch with MINI USA about the issue. While this problem doesn’t seem to be wide-spread (everyone I spoke with were unaware of the issue due to lack of warranty reports), they urge anyone who believes they have an issue to contact their dealer as well as MINI Customer relations. Despite not having first hand knowledge of this particular problem, everyone I spoke with seemed genuinely interesting in resolving any potential issue (whether it be cold start related or anything else) quickly and effectively.
Thanks for that link - this is probably one of two times I'm thankful that I couldn't afford an S nor have the ability to drive a standard shift anymore, not that these comments of mine are very helpful. I hate reading this stuff, it makes me very angry and disappointed.

Since I tend not to read much about any MINI S versions, I hadn't been aware of this - I'm glad to have been made aware, and will hope for good news soon.

So far so good here, but unfortunately for those of us that opted for the S model, the odds of developing this problem are greater than we would like to admit. Still love the Clubman S and do not regret the choice one bit. To the OP: The engine in your 2006 MCS is totally different from the one in your Clubman S. Not a good point of reference. But I do agree that the "lowly" supercharged TRITEC engine is virtually bulletproof.

Ever since this problem was published in MF, MINIUSA has gone totally silent about it. The general concensus is that the engine is experiencing oil starvation..

The clicking and the "cold start noise" are two different things. The engine does click when it's on because of its intended design. There is no problem with it clicking. The cold start noise is not that clicking. It is an inconsistent, metal-grinding sound that lasts momentarily.

Yes. The clicking noise is because of the direct fuel injection design in the Prince engine.

do you mean 'clicking' (because of the direct injection) or 'rattling'

I REALLY hope the first

Now the R56 is an “interesting” sounding engine to begin with. The combination of the VANOS system and the direct fuel injection solenoids give the car a very diesel-esque sound at idle. But this is a very different sound altogether.
I SO hope they sorted it out

Keep in mind there have been no changes to the 2008 power plant to suggest that this issue will be limited to first-year production cars. So any MCS or Clubman S could theoretically have the potential to develop this rattle on start up.
oh dear..

approaching 7000 km without any probs..

Yep. However, the turbocharged engine is well worth it and don't regret going that route. The Cooper Clubman is a very nice car, but the effortless punch of the turbocharger and slight drop in fuel economy made it a no brainer to us.

I was talking about the "cold start noise" not the clicking due to the direct fuel injection.

The turbo Prince engine[current engine model developed by BMW and the French PSA Group(Peugeot Citroen)] began production in 2005. Its first application was in the Peugeot 207 GTi & 207 RC in 2006 and these cars have also reported the same problem.

Basically, neither BMW nor PSA have cared to resolve this problem.

I just bought a MCS manual, taking delivery this week or beginning of next week, and I knew about this issue before I ordered my Mini. I haven't heard of any problem regarding this issue and am hoping to not find any.

Dan

I have a 2008 MCS, engine by PSA/Peugeot, tranny by Getrag of Germany. My MINI is exactly three months old delivered, driven only by me. 2501 miles as of this post.

I have seen posts regarding the new generation MINI engines sounding like a diesel on startup. I first experienced this today. It sounded like Lurch70's posted videos but disappeared after warming up, pulling out of the driveway and driving to the end of the street.

I would be alarmed but I have driven other (non-turbo) cars that exhibit this same symptom on startup.

I will keep an eye on the conditions preceding this noisy startup.
