Carbon Fiber Sunroof Plug?

I know this topic has been discussed before, and I also know of the Project MCS done by Sport Compact Car Magazine a few years ago. But has anyone ever come accross this site?

A real, honest-to-goodness carbon fiber sunroof plug sounds almost reasonable even at $500 shipped. Naturally, this company (lighterfaster.com) is also willing to give discounts to group buys.

Like anything of this nature, there are a few pains that must be taken, such as providing them with an accurate template and properly installing the thing.

Do you think this might actually be a feasible (though hardly practical) solution or possibility?

We had a thread resently of a guy here in AZ that would do a full roof cap for around $500.00. I would guess sun roof plug would be quite a bit less.

Interesting...what about sunroof "pieces" so that it would still function...

That would definitely be the way to go, anything is possible with the money to fund the project...

Full roof cap?? You mean, like, the WHOLE roof? Like in the latest M3? For 5 bills?? Could you give me a link to the thread?

What I meant by the sun roof 'plug', by the way, was simply a single, large, non-functioning piece of Carbon Fibre. It would be easier and cheaper to fab, and lighter, do mainly to the fact that you could then do away with the sunroof motor and all parts associated with its movement.

The company, lighterfaster.com, does nothing BUT sunroof plugs; so I would expect some decent build quality.

Would anyone be interested in a group buy?

It came down to only two of us wanting to go ahead with this, but now I've gone on with some other things since there wasn't the support for a GB. Get in touch with Jim, I bet if someone in AZ drops off a sun roof he could make your plug.

Sport Compact Car Magazine made a CF sunroof plug for their project mini. It caused nothing but pain.

As per my first post. The main reason for this is because the plug was 1/2" too small, so they filled in the gap with silicone.

If done right, the only pain should be the removal of the sunroof (esp the rear glass).

I'm sure he can, but has Jim ever made a sunroof plug before?

If so, would anyone be willing to drop Jim off a sunroof (or a template?)
