Autobahn: What she can do

So, one of my closest friends is in town for a visit. We've been friends forever, back when he had a 5.0 Mustang and I drove my '69 Camaro, until now -- me with my '06 R53, and he with his '06 330i. With the kids in tow, we headed off for dinner at a local favorite place. Getting there, though, meant one exit and a few miles down the autobahn.

Coming home, as we finished the on ramp, I looked around and saw that I had the road to myself. I pressed that little pedal on the right, and off we went.

Sailing along at about 120 mph, I asked him what he thought of the car. Handles nicely, he said, as he looked over to see the speedometer. His eyes got wider -- this is 120?

Yeah, man -- the car easily cruises at 120.

He truly had no idea.

I love my car.

I got that reaction driving my Ford Ranger on the Autobahn -- "this is 90? wow, it feels like 155 and the thing is breaking apart"

Must be nice! The last time I was on an autobahn was with my 1967 Opel Rekord.

The U.S. needs an autobahn. Who knows what will happen though with our drivers.

My wife just does not like the way I drive, period. Autobahn or back in the States doesn't matter, I typically drive just a bit over the posted limit. However, she had the opportunity to drive Maggie down into Germany around Christmas and didn't realize just how easy it is to end up cruising around the 'bahn doing 110-120!!! Not that I made an issue to her about it, just a kind observation! "So, how's that cruise control working for you? Oh, your not using it?!? Gee, I'm sorry!"

BTW, Maggie is 21 months old now and just went over 41100 miles!! Gotta love Europe!

Cheers!!

It's okay to try it in a GCSRT8 though........a little off topic I know, but thought I'd share this pic of one of our Grand Cherokee SRT8 forum members taken on his daily commute while stationed in Germany. Hard to visualize our "bricks" running at this speed, but they will............

I miss the Autobahns and driving with others that truly know how to drive.

On my commute tonight... no less than 3 idiot drivers.

Enjoy the autobahn while you can. And stop playing around at 120 mph. Your blood really gets pumping around 140.

Being a Brit who spent years in the Netherlands (and thus was able to hit the autobahns on cars and bikes) now living in California, it's sometimes tough to get that speed satisfaction.

However, last night I wanted to see how accurate my 06 MCS Speedo was vs GPS. 130 vs 128 on the 101 from LA to Ventura. What amazed me the most was that fuel consumption didn't seem to be too badly affected by the higher speed antics.

Please - no safety **** comments about speeding on the highway. Thanks

Apparently, you've never driven in Rome...
And pushing down the autobahn in a '64 Triumph Spitfire MK4... Lordy! Things moved on that car that were never intended to by the designers.

OK, I'm not trying to be a stick in the mud, and no I have never driven on the Autobahn. But I would never think of doing 120 with my kid in the car. Now maybe it's common practice in Germany, but that would scare the **** out of me to put my kid in danger like that. Have I gone that fast? Yes, late at night with no one around to hurt but myself. And yes, before someone tries to be a smart ***, hurting myself would in turn hurt my kid. So call me a stupid red-neck Texan, idiot American if that makes you feel better, but those speeds with kids seams foolish.

Let the flames begin.

Nope. But I'll call you a caring parent and say "Attaboy!" (hell, I even like Texans!), but I think from reading the post, he and his friend came back in the Mini and the rest went back in the Beemer. Just guessin' here, but I hope that's what he did.

Would some please pass me my Bic?!?!?

One thing I do like about being a red-neck Texan from Kemah is that I'll do my thing and you'll do yours. Until yours bothers me, you won't have any problems! So, kindly keep to the right as I blast by at 120+ mph because I can't see you through the gun racks on the front and back windows. I'll try to be careful as I reach for the beer my boy just opened cuz we're on our way to our nightly church meeting!! Now, you other kids, keep it quite back there! Your screaming is keeping me from listening to my supercharger!! </sarcasm>

Was that a bit over the top? Naw, I didn't even mention the kid hanging onto the roof!!

Cheers!!

Perhaps I was lucky, but I've driven in Rome and Florence. While it was crazy, it didn't find it nearly as bad as legend has it. I have been driving in Italy for almost three years now, so perhaps I'm starting to assimilate?

Driving the autobahn at 120 mph is EXPONENTIALLY safer than driving on most of our US cities' beltways at 65 mph. I assure you that.

^ True that! (aka +1)

I've driven on it in a car with the cruise set at 135 . . . and in a Ford Fiesta POS that could not creep over 60-65. I felt safe in both situations -- everything has its place on the autobahn and, as long as you know where you belong and drive accordingly, it is great.
(But it's also why it wouldn't work in the States -- 'cause we don't know how to drive and our sense of entitlement would not allow us to drive accordingly)
