Nobody has mentioned that the Autobahn was commissioned and built by Hitler's regime for the sole purpose of moving war material.
And, yes, it would be nice to have stepped licensing here in the states, but it'll never happen (thank God) as long as we live in a democracy.

In turn, Eisenhower established the interstates (I-whatever) for pretty much the same reason. Guess he didn't plan on running tanks on it though.
No flames from me, but it does seem to be getting harder to hang on to the democracy part.

That's not quite true. Entertaining urban legend, good party conversation -- just inaccurate.

Oh, and I saw an honest-to-goodness accident on the autobahn this weekend. At the end of an 80-khm construction zone (narrow left lane), when things opened back up to 120 mph, a lady in the left lane blindly tried to change lanes to the slow lane. Might be the first time I've seen an actual accident on the autobahn, while it unfolded. No one appeared injured, just glass and fluids.
