actually, it closes fine, but it appends the inserted URL onto the end of www.northamericanmotoring.com, rendering the link dead. ex: northamericanmotoring.com/forums/www.cnn/com is how it links :(

test (should be www.cnn.com) - mouse over it in IE or FF and it should show the destination on the bottom left corner of the browser to prevent misdirects

Dan - I have a non-modified version of vBulletin on my dev machine and it always works this way with Firefox. From my testing I've also seen it do the same thing with bold, underline, etc. If you don't have at least a space immediately after the word you are bolding, linking, etc. it thinks that it needs to continue whatever was selected as the markup option.

I havent had an issue with the links, I manually type in the code tags myself.. but maybe I should try using the button options...

nah.... I have seen IE do odd things with formatting and page breaks. When I do web development It sux cause IE has separate rendering options as opposed to Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc...

uber l33t = hand coding

ok, so add the space, then select the word to embed. I don't have to do that on other boards, so it seemed an issue here only.

what's the deal with the NAM URL that gets embedded (examples above)? That seems inconsistent...can't always make it work or keep it out either.

In my non-modded dev install if I create a post and select a word to link to a URL it expects a fully qualified URL using http:// plus the all the rest of things. If, however, I leave out http:// and make it a relative URL such as "/index.php" it will automatically include the domain of the site. I tried this down in the test forum and it appears to work the same way.

http://www.cnn.com

click

default is http:// (add the rest)

I see...overwriting the default and using www.cnn.com for example appends to the NAM space. Interesting. No, I'm not a n00b I've only had these issues here...wonder if the other boards have been tweaked to make it literal.

I haven't run across anything that talks about tweaking this. I noticed this behavior a long time ago and just changed the way I link slightly to accommodate it. If there is a vBulletin add-on to make this more obvious it would certainly be useful.

Slightly Related--have you seen the feature that uses the destination links Title as the thread link? Over on Caymanclub.net that I sponsor, when anyone posts a link in a thread, it grabs the title of the page of that link and puts it as the LINKED ITEM in the post, as well as the link to that item.

Richard - can you send me a link to a thread on Cayman Club where this is done. Is this something you think is useful or annoying?

At first I thought it was annoying because the link names were fixed, but then I realized that as long as the pages are named properly, it's a pretty good feature. Keeps link titles consistent and makes it easier.

I can still edit the link to tweak it on the post if needed, but it makes link insertions very easy.

I see what's going on. This is a vbSEO function. It is using the thread titles to improve search engine optimization.

we used that and stopped after about a week. it wasn't what it was cracked up to be. i'd have to research it to remember what issues it caused.

MINI2 has this feature also.

Here's the results from copying and pasting an eBay and RealOEM URL:

eBay Motors: Mini : CLUBMAN (item 260218800772 end time Mar-16-08 08:39:08 PDT)

RealOEM.COM BMW R53 Cooper S JOHN COOPER WORKS TUNINGKIT 210 HP

In most cases I end up having to tweak the title, unless I remember to uncheck the Automatically retrieve titles from external links option
