120 mph = bye bye windshield weatherstriping

Currently on a roadtrip, colorado to Texas and back. My wife had the mini up to a higher than posting allows speed, and the top windhield weatehrstipping bubbled, then started to peel itself off. It's ducttaped down not for the return trip.

Anyone else have a similar problem?

It's under warranty, but I surly don't want to have to go back to the dealer more than once for this.

OEM winshield as far as I know.

wow that's fast..im not gonna flame on the speeding but im assuming it couldnt handle that speed..it should be able to..per say if you were on a track.
but im quite interested in hearing wat others have to say. hopefully its not all minis that have this problem.

I've never heard of that happening at any or our track events, but we don't hit that kind of speed for sustained periods......

That hasn't happened to any of our MINIs or the MINIs that I hang with. I wouldn't your speed to the SA either, unless you know them well enough.

read this thread?

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=127192

not an answer, but might give you another angle on the issue

sounds like a dealer trip, although I might be tempted to leave out the conditions under which the problem occurred

i dunno if the folks that have raised eyebrows have driven that route - i have and that's some straight roads and BIG country!

did you folks hear the noise at all? there's a video clip on the first page of that thread...

seems that our upright cabin and broad windshield glass puts a fair bit of stress up there at > 100 mph speeds...

how was your mileage? < 20 mpg?

NAM doesn't like us writing about driving at reckless speeds -- but this information is only usefull if we know the conditions at which it happened. . .

so let's just say your wife was going 60 mph into a 60 mph head-wind.

I had this same problem, but at 70mph. It was after a windshield replacement at the dealer. They changed the thing 5 times, last time they glued it. Since then, it’s ok.

Don't want to judge anyone, but 120mph is way too fast on a regular road. Fine if you want to kill yourself, but in that kind of accident you usually kill innocent people.

I've oft heard of Gen 1 MINIs losing the weatherstipping around the windshield. Dealer fix. However, they generally make the least 'invasive' fix first and it doesn't always hold. Good in theory, not-so-good if you live far from the dealer and have to make multiple trips. If your dealer offers a pick-up/loaner service like MINI of Pittsburgh, that could help out significantly.

I wouldn't condone 120 on a public road - but it sounds like this was probably in Texas where there ain't nuthin' 'round you but tumbleweeds.

Before ya'll start to question the speed please keep in mind that there are large parts of Texas where the speed limit is 80mph and you can drive for an hour or so and see no one else.

Some will then pipe in that you could hit a deer, or this being Texas, a cow. You can also hit a deer on the unrestricted autobahn too.

. . . or in my buddy's case, dropped log from a logging truck -- which sent his Cavalier airborn

That is odd. I've driven cars on the German Autobahns at speeds in excess of 140 mph and I've ridden on the Autobahn at speeds approaching 200 mph and enver had anything fly off the vehicle. And all but one of the cars was US Specs.

MINI certainly should test the vehicles to that kind of speed. My guess would be that it's not the original windshield and the replacement was not exactly perfectly done.

And to those flaming the OP about the speed... I've been on plenty of roads in the US where it was completely safe to drive at that speed. It's all a matter of picking your time and place.

^ I don't need it -- I have my wife in the passenger seat to hit me on the head if I exceed the limit by more than 20.

Edit - although when we lived in Germany, she too experienced the speed limiter on our 325 (it's around 137 mph)

I do it legally (German Autobahn) and have never had anything fly off. To be honest, I have been quite a bit faster than you were and still nothing flew off my 06.

FWIW, I have MTH and thus no limiter... Gotta love Germany!

lost weatherstripping

I've lost the upper weatherstripping 4 times, one or both A piller covers twice each, B piller covers 5 times, air intake grilles 3 times (usually the driver's side), and a side marker light once.

The speeds varyed from 75 to 140+.

It depended on if I had a head wind, crosswind, or popped out from behind a larger vehicle to pass, or out of a tunnel.

I replaced them myself and glued them in place. Haven't had a problem since.

All parts that come flying off this car are of the finest craftsmanship .......

Sorry guys, the windshield of our mini sucks. The A pillar covers on the side of the windshield is prone to fly off --- not a bad fix -- maybe $75.00; but it seriously flies off ... quite amazing.

While your at it -- replace the dipstick every 3-4 years --- they break.

I'm not going to state the exact speed but I actually topped out my MC for a couple seconds. I was following a certain someone in their Saab 9-5 Aero who said the Mini couldn't keep up... Ok it did to a point but you can't compare the two. One is an all out sports car with probably one of the best built engine/tranny combo's in the world (speaking from an engineering standpoint not total output) and the other is a Mini with a 1.6L and 115hp. You simply can't compete. Even in the twisties the 9-5 Aero (and only the aero's) will out handle a REGULAR mini.

I do regularly take it 10% shy of triple digits.

Still I never had a problem with the weatherstripping. My guess you got british built blunder, take it back and have it fixed properly.

And proving my theory that the Mini "Crappers" are sent to the states and they keep the 100% models for Europe where the name means and SHOULD mean something.

Funny that a thread like this is fine (Since it's about weatherstripping), but god forbid we mention going over the posted speed limit without something flying off (Just for the hell of it). I guess I'll have to add that in any time I want to post about speeding...

I've also gone quite a bit faster than that (Pretty close to the gearing limited top speed) with no objects flying off the car. Sounds like a freak occurrence of some sort...
