With all this talk of the pulley upgrades that everyone has gotten. I have a quick question. How does this mod affect your ability to pass CA SMOG? Does anyone know or have any past experience?

Does a pully affect emissions like an intake does? I think you'll be alright with a pully. I passed smog with an aftermarket exhaust...

actually a pulley since it's pushing more air into the engine will affect the air/fuel mix. more specifically what does the ecu do once it detects more air? will it richen up the fuel too much? will it cause the timing to backoff more once the boost raises? there's a bunch of stuff that could happen. OR, it could just be that the ecu and the engine handle the added boost just fine with no real difference in emissions. But, I dunno... that's why I'm hoping someone else can answer this. help....

I would think that getting the ECU mod would possibly be even a bigger concern. Again, we will not know until... Is it possible to go for a smog when not due for one, and have it not go on record? Heck, if so, let's all pitch-in a couple bucks and one of us do this!

Anybody can get a smog anytime. You especially need one if you are selling a car. Just sold my Jeep on Monday and had to get one prior. I paid way too much though ($64) coz I needed it asap. And yes, it does go on record (gets sent to dmv by the test station)

I will be going in for a CA smog test with my MINI in the next month. I currently have the Rogue Intake, Pulley, and Borla Exhaust. I'm planning on swapping back to the stock intake for the test though. I'll report back after the test.

OTP OTP Warning

You can thank "RED" Davis for the 3x hike in smog test fees.
Let's vote the bum out.

We've had hundreds of people in CA install our WMW pulley and not have any problems with emissions. I wouldn't worry about passing.

Do you have any recommendations for the bay area (San Jose, CA area)?
- Shops that installed WayMotorWorks pulley
- Smog stations that passed mini w pulley

What about WayMotorWork CAI? Do you know of any smog station that had passed CAI for my area?

These are the only things left standing between me and placing the orders for your parts. Thank you

I'm in San Jose

I'm telling you no smog tech will notice your pulley

Intake is easily changed out for smog

Edge motorworks in mountain view can do your pulley

And I don't think way will give shops on a public forum that is highly illegal

If you can find a Dininan or JCW intake, they are both carb approved....have stickers... (What could make a CAI "non compliant other than not having had a $$$ test, who knows...it is a AIR FILTER....).
The problem I eluded to is you brought a thread back to life from 2003...many threads cover this...on a nearly monthly basis for you poor SOB'S in CA....
Folks do cams, injectors, custom tunes, heads, cat backs etc...it all comes down to "looking" stock...and not beaing a doushbag about what you say when you bring your car in......
Many of the mods will actually improve your mpg...comes down to the driver...

I have a guy in San Diego that does pulleys, but otherwise don't deal with smog shops.

I was worried about this. So I painted my pulley with textured black paint. After a season of engine grime the tech did not notice my pulley. And all the numbers from the sniffer were within spec.

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for all your advice. Very much appreciated. I was amazed that 2 of the more mentioned shops in NAM wouldn't want to do the pulley installation because, as they said, it would be "illegal". One of the members here recommended a shop that would install an Alta 15% pulley and JCW CAI. It's a little pricey but they seemed professional and experienced. Once again, you NAM members are super awesome. Thanks again!

Fyi, who wants install pulley,
I am in CA and have Cosworth head and both M7 Pulleys and Borla Exhaust. But I have stock air box and don't have any problem to pass SMOG.
