wing intructions

There was a very good step by step install of the wing in MC2 magazine a while back. It had informative pictures etc. Try their website, do a search. I'll bet this is exactly what you are looking for.

first question is, why?

i believe that it will be VERY difficult. i have thought about adding a CF boot, but i'm afraid that i won't be able to remove the JCW wing w/out damaging it. i'm not worried about the boot, since i would be replacing it, but it would totally **** me off if i damaged the wing. let me know how it goes.

jc on the motoring underground removed his, but I don't know how. He sold it to me and it on my car now and looks great, so I know it can be done

I think that with a person slighlty pulling up.

Then a plastic scrapper to break the epoxy. Or a fishing line and saw through the epoxy.

Along with using a heat gun since it is cold outside. Or the cold might be better???

i build custom furniture and cabinetry for mega-yachts. i use epoxy on an almost daily basis. if the surfaces were properly prepared before gluing, one of two things can happen.....1. the sheet metal on the boot bends or 2. the weakest link in the construction of the wing is found.

Epoxy will laugh at a plastic scraper and fishing line. i don't think that heat will have much effect, either. i've used epoxy in many abusive situations and, if properly applied, doesn't fail. even if you want it to....

i would love to hear how jc removed his (as well as how he installed it)

keep me posted. i'm afraid of catastrophic failures.

bean thanks for your insight. I've used epoxy compounds before and if used on a clean prepped surface they are as good a welded metals...

Hopefully the dealership didn't clean the surface or mixed the epoxy wrong.

The wing is installed with betalink. It is an actual OEM kit that you can get from the dealer which cures to a hard rubber. On the used wing, I had to scrape it out of the channel using a flathead screwdriver and then I installed using the OEM directions

thanks for the info. i used the same betalink product when i mounted my wing. i since loaned it to someone else and cannot check out the product. i was told that it was an epoxy, which would dry rock hard and not rubbery at all. i know that the wing hasn't come off at my MINI's terminal track velocity! it may be more similar to a catalyzed 3M 5200. i wouldn't want to have to take that off either! if i go with a cf boot, i won't really car what happens to the existing one, but i would hate to trash the wing.

Hey all!

I just bought a JCW Wing and now cannot get the old wing off. What did you end up doing? I started with some dental floss once I got the bolts off and it didn't come right up.

I read this thread and it is exactly what others are running into.

How did you get your old wing off?

Mark

I got mine off my 03 MCS, undid bolts, lubbed it up with some WD40, then sawed with doubled up fishing line, used a plastic wedge aswell but it scuffed my paint work, have to try n polish out now, just be very gentle, it was stuck with adhesive pads so thats what you are cutting thru, go one side round the bolt then other.
