Reliability after 40K mi

I'm contemplating buying a used '04 manual cooper S with 41K miles and was wondering if you all could chime in as to the reliability you've experienced with similar age/mileage.

Thanks in advance!

I purchased my Mini with 31 thousand miles on it. A little over 2 years later it has 77 thousand on it and run better then ever.

May I ask what your buying it for? I'm selling my 04 and I was just curious what they are going for.
Thank you
Mario

I've put a lot of hard miles on mine and it is still strong with just under 80k. if you can get the service redords with it and have a good shop in the area for after warrenty repairs if needed you should have no problems.

I bought my 03 R50 with 45k about a year and a half ago. Now 18 months and 16k more miles, not 1 issue other than a xenon that likes to act up. Knocks on wood. Its all in the maintenance. My oil's changed every 3k with Mobil 1, the plugs were done at maybe 50k, new belt, brakes got done, trans serviced, radiator flushed, all little stuff. The only thing left is really the brakes should be bled when it gets inspected this year.

I test drove the '04 tonight, and ultimately decided not to buy. The outside was a gorgeous electric blue, with no scratching or dents. The inside was another story. The paint was chipping off all of the interior "chrome" parts, and the glovebox was being held up with velcro. A few plastic components were broken off. The inside of the box had pronounced beverage stain. All this on a car with 35K miles.

The transmission also felt very clunky. I'm not sure if this is "normal" on an 04. I test drove an 07 last week and I don't know if I'm just being too critical with the comparison.

Any input will be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm at 167,000+ w/ very few problems, most just maintenance!

Sounds like there was some rough housing going on inside that car .... I wonder it the gearbox / clutch was abused too.

I'm pretty gentile with my 57K miles 04 S - but MINI interior bits should hold up better than what you saw - even under normal care and use.
My transmission feels smooth and reliability has been very good ~ nothing major.

I think you made the right choice walking away from that one ~ you should find some very well cared for MINIs available on this forum.
