Pull Cable under rear seat?

I peeked under my rear seat on my 06 MCS today, and there was a cable with a "D" ring on it. Couldn't figure out what it was for. Looked in the manual, no dice.

Any ideas? To remove the seats mabye?

That is to open the rear hatch, should your battery go dead

does anybody know if this cable is purchasable through the dealer? I had my battery out the other day, didn't re-connect the battery leads properly, and closed the hatch. Went looking for said hatch release and found out I didn't have one!

I am pretty sure the previous owner had a small accident in the rear quarter, and the person who fixed it removed the cable (I hope)

if you have a cabrio, you don't get the cable. Instead you get a longish rod with a hooked end to reach behind the rear seat and unhook it.

Yeah, I think the possibility of battery going dead, and thus being unable to get in to the rear, was a "minor oversight" and the cable was added in 03. But hey, you do have a 12v power socket in the back!
