I have a 3 week old Mini CVT and am wondering if other CVT owners also have a dead spot when they step on the gas at a standing start. Not a dead spot, but a hesatation before it starts to go. Could this be the stumble every S owner is seeing? And will the new upgrade (when released) probably solve this?

Thanks. Jim

Orion,
Do a search on CVT hesitation/stumble/yoyo or software upgrade 33.1
see

Make an appt to see your dealer and ask for the latest software update - tell them about your problem.

My MCS has never had any stumble or hesitancy problems. Built 10/02. Works like a gem.

yep, i got this 'hesitation' too. it's kinda like from a stop when i gas it, it takes a second for it to find the gear before it kicks in. and it does this in whatever mode i'm in - D, SD, manual. i've kinda learned to time it so that when i need to make those quick left turns, i actually depress the accelerator a split second earlier than i would with my p/u.

i do plan to check with the dealer sometime. or maybe test drive their's to see if the same occurs.

That's it kbs. Not the worse thing in the world, but aggravating. I will
definitely ask the dealer about this when the newer software is really
out there. Thanks

Take your time. It is all really a plot by MCS owners to add a minor flaw to MC CVTs, so that in a race between the two the MCS has a chance even if the MCS driver happens to goof up with the shifting- just a minor problem.
Yep, this explains a lot of stuff. Why the flaw and why the flaw keeps returning even after fixing it. Well someone is going around at night and undoing the fixes of course.

Hi Jim- we have matching Minis! I picked mine up June 27- and I have a bit of a hesitation, but am beginning to get used to it and work around it as I am getting used to the feeling of my car. My new problem tho is my battery light has started flickering- took it in and was told it is a comouter glitch- but it has nothing to do with the battery- they ran the diagnostics and everything came up ok. Have you had any such flickering?

Hi speedy57. I have had the batt light flicker on two different occasions. It happened at stert-up and only flicked a couple of times. It did this on the first few days I got it. It hasn't happened since.

Thanks. Jim

May I direct your attention to this extremely interesting discussion topic over at MINI2.com:

It's called "CVT Driving technique"

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...p;pagenumber=1

One of the posters there "Johnwald" has been doing extensive research and real time track and dyno tests with his Cooper CVT and he has come up with very intriguing findings. Needless to say, the CVT is one TERRIFIC TECHNOLOGICAL MARVEL. Unfortunately our cars are very misunderstood and to make things worse, we the owners, don't know how to make the best performance out of the CVT powertrain arragement.

The discussion thread is about 151 posts but it is a MUST READ FOR EVERY CVT OWNER.

We currently have 10K+ miles in our '02 Cooper CVT and the car is running like a champ and smooth as silk!

Cooper4us-
Thanks for the link and for increasing the awareness that -well yes, it takes skill to drive a MINI and especially so with either a CVT or a manual. Since they have not built the self driving auto steering version of the MINI yet I think it is reasonable for the rest of us to learn what we can. Skill counts -lets work on some driving skill.
I drove the CVT for a full day and did not notice one bit the problems described. It was a blast and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Made me wonder why I bought the MCS. That is until I got back in my MCS.
The point is all of the MINIs are good and each one a bit different.
Maybe there is a bit of a weakness in the CVT that is revealed but there is much else there to offer. Maybe the software update is OK- although a bit more tweeking seems in order. I'm always looking for ways to drive better.
I know I will enjoy the MINI2 CVT thread- thanks again.
