what do you camera guys think?

 

Both are very good. Do you have any Nikon or Canon stuff now or access to either from friends? Since most of the people I know use Nikon I went that way so I can borrow lens and such.

I needed to add that I have an old 8008 with an SB 24, a AF 70-210 and a AF 35-70 from the same era.....

I am told i can still use these lenses but I really don't know how they compare to the newer lenses for the digital cameras..... can I just but the D80 body.... I am thinking of getting the 35-135 DX series lense....

I say D80 (but I am a Nikon guy) and there are some nice lenses out there that are reasonable in DX with the anti vibe on them too....I would recommend the D70 if they still made it but since they don't the D80 or better would be my choice. The D40 and D40x are nice but much smaller and I dont like the way you have to look at the screen on the back to know the settings and so forth. Good luck on your search.

 

When I was looking to upgrade, that is exactly what I had it narrowed down to.

I'm still on the low end of the learning curve, but I went with the D80, and I love it!!! Just don't go with Broadway Photo ............long story, lesson learned.

 

You can buy just the D80 body. I was in your situation a few months ago and my brother is a photographer and told me to go with the D80. It is very similar to the D200, but it doesn't have the same amount of features. Same megapixels though.

I learned last night that the D300 does NOT have any "auto" features (neither does the D200) As I am new i want these to fall back on while I am learning.....

I am leaning toward the Nikon.... less money and Ii have some lenses.... I just discovered the "Nikonian" forum so I am headed there... I'm sure they will all recommend the Canon.....

He has everything, and you will be shocked at what he recommends.

I did a lot of research and then took his advice, I think he is spot on with his recommendations.

The D80 compares more with the XTi & the 40D is a cut above both.

If you're already a Nikon loyalist (and have Nikon lenses) the D80 is a fine choice.

If you're looking for a more professional grade camera & can spend $$$ on good glass to get the most out of it, then go for the 40D.

I like the way the Canon software works much better. I can change every setting with one hand while holding the camera in the shooting position. You can't do this with Nikon. However, both are excellent cameras now (when I was shopping Canon had much better high ISO capabilities). If you really can't decide which body to get then go find a lens you really like and let that guide you. Personally I like the Nikor lenses better but have amassed a decent collection of Canon lenses so I'm pretty much married to Canon at this point.

I shoot with a 5D (full frame is nice)

The important advise is get something and shoot with it. I see too many on photography forums who spend more time debating nikon/canon and no time shooting anything.

Agreed (even on buying from Broadway photo, I have had problems from the get go but I love the images!)

The D80 is a RAD camera. Definatly nice to get the vertical grip as well...

 

I teach Digital Photography at bnoth the high school and community college leves. I use the Nikon d 40 and have founf it to be an incrediby great camera. it is durable, has every multifunction setup one could ask for, great optics, super fast processing times and is lightweight. Students ahve used camers now since August and not one has even so much as flinched. Battery life is stupendous. It is the best buy for the buck on the market today.

 

Not sure what you mean by having to look at the screen for the settings. All the aperture/shutter and flash settings are inside the viewfinder..I guess, unless you mean all the setup features...a small price to pay for a nice piece of equipment for a nice price. The great thing is...they are all great cameras...and it comes down to personal choice and price. I had to buy 20 of them w/cases, filters, flashes and a few extra lenses, so price did tend to drive me a tad....okay, more than a tad, but they are still great cameras. www.bhphotovideo.com is another great camera place.

 

Peter from M7 is/was a professional photographer and his advice was the D300. After reading all the reviews and repecting Peter's advice I have chosen to stretch the budget and get the D300.... porbably order it in the next two weeks..... anyone have a good source?

You wont regret the D300, I plan on upgrading from my D80 to the D300 this summer...
Sources. Bh as mentioned is a solid choice. Otherwise look for a good out of a reputable source..

 

I also plan to 'upgrade' to a D300 from a D50, later this year.

D300 certainly is nice, but pricey. I'm surprised to see lots of "Nikonians" here. From reading these forums, it seemed that there were more Canon fans...

i've been playing with a D80 for the past couple months. I will have to say, that it's pretty nice. But you could prolly put any DSLR in my hand and I will say it's nice, cuz I have no clue. I don't know anything about the camera.

 

Nikon is great...i have one and my son shoots for his university newspaper with them. Try B&H in New York....we buy all of our stuff there online and have always been happy. Good prices.
