I read somewhere that all aftermarket performance modifications, with the exception of those that are CARB exempt (ie. K&N intake), are illegal. This seems odd, because lots of people have catbacks etc. I was looking into the M-R OE-RS Catback for the base cooper, will I run into issues with the law cuz of it? And has anyone tried a smog check with it - does it pass?

 

I believe that the exhaust needs to be CARB exempt as well. Try Borla and Magnaflow.

As long as it's a "CAT back" exhaust system it shouldn't matter ... the catalytic converter is the device that cleans the air which is what the CARB is all about.
