Q: When is Black Not Really Black?

A: When you order an Astro Black MINI.

OK to me the Astro Black under certain lighting looks pretty blue. So my real question, when you order a two-toned MINI with a black roof, is the roof really "black" or is it "astro black"?

The roof/mirror caps are true black... no sparkle to it what-so-ever.

The real question is--Do you want Metallic or Flat black?

Jet Black is flat--and that's what you get on the roof and mirror caps.

Ah, the mirror color was really what i was trying to figure out, glad you mentioned it. So what color are the mirrors on an Astro Black MINI, true black or sparkly black?

i think i want flat black if i'm trading mirror caps with someone with a "black roof". Metallic black would look kind of strange on a chili red with nothing else metallic.

The OP is right. I was at the local dealership recently and was about to ask what's the name of that color of blue and then realized it was Astro Black.

Bring back JET BLACK !! I swear I'm going to start a petition soon and send it to MINI USA.

You can only order Astro Black with same color roof or white roof. MINI won't let your have a flat black roof and a Astro Black body.

an astro black mini will have astro black mirror caps - unless you get a white roof or chrome mirrors - never with flat black mirrors.

The mirrors and top of an AB MINI are AB. The only other color you can order is white top and mirrors or the chrome mirrors.

Now if you get the JCW CF mirrors and other exterior bits the CF weave looks very sharp against the AB paint. I love my AB with the CF parts.

Astro black.

And astro black is just metalic black with more blue flake, all metallic blacks have black or blue flake in them. My car looks black in some lights and outside, but in bright sunshine or in garage lights it looks like dark navy.

I ordered Astro Black, but if Jet Black was still available, I would have gone with that.

I very nearly went with Dark Silver/Black also.

Frankly....not happy

I had an all black C6Z06 all blacked out and planned on doing the same with the Mini.
Ordered Astro Black sight unseen. I said "black"

I get this charcoal bluish looking thing.

I LOVE my car. But really PISSED about color as I can't black it out now.

and the entire car is AB other than the pillars...those are true black.

im dead serious honestly considering painting it true black or matte black 'cause i really really hate the color. i would have ordered the dark silver instead.

I was veryyy close to ordering Astro Black sight unseen as well. Frankly I'm glad I decided to wait as while it is a gorgeous color, it's not black which is what I was going for.

do people not look at the color sample metal things at the dealer before ordering? It's got a bubble in the middle to show how lighting plays off the colors. I ask because my wife wanted the purple color for her cabrio until she saw the sample. she ended up ordering Cool Blue

Well the issue for me is that I couldn't go into the dealer. Was out of the country on vacation with no MINI dealers anywhere even remotely close. Hence my having to order sight unseen (my dealer back here actually had an AB in stock).

Maybe it needs a new name that mentions blue?

I went to the dealer fully intending to get some variety of silver until I saw an astro-black. I didn't know the name of the color yet, I just loved the way the light played off the car, making it black from some angles and dark blue from others.

Midnight blue?
Ambassador blue?
Mariana Trench blue?

I doubt they'll change the name. BMW has a carbon black on the M models that has even more blue in it. Both are cool colours if you are not seeking a jet black.

I think the name for the color is perfect. It's more like a night sky than true black, thus the name.

Personally, I would prefer a pure black option.

Astro Black cars are all Astro Black (mirror caps and roof included). But the pillars are plain old gloss black (which really shows how NOT black AB is).

I was going to get Sparkling Silver till I saw Astro in the showroom under lights. So I got AB/AB. Wish I hadn't. It's a PITA to keep clean.

AB vs FB

I had an '05 flat black. Since I ONLY buy black cars this was a stretch for me. However, I do like it alot. I put red sport stripes on it to match my rooster red/piano black interior.

I think the AB is easier to let go a couple days without dusting or quick detailing.

I had a regular black BMW before and it showed swirls and all types of nicks and my last BMW before my MINI was Cosmos Black (same as AB) and it was easier to get away with not washing or hiding nicks in the paint and such as well as not showing any swirls unless you are right up on the paint. Plus it gets good reactions from different light angles.
