R56 2008 Motor Trend COTY Contender: Mini Cooper
I think they already picked the winner, didn't they? (the CTS)
the later year MINIs have a simi functional scoop with about every other hole not plugged
Not to sound too harsh, but frankly I don't car what they think. I won't care next year either. But...they need to fill pages so what the heck.

Motor Trend isn't worth the paper it's printed on. It's written by least common denominator automotive journalists with only marginally more in common with the typical driving enthusiast than Consumer Reports. Check this out...

Beyond that, it's always nice for someone who typically only gets to drive big SUVs or pickup trucks to get a chance to drive some of the better sport coupes and sedans of the day. To my mind, vehicles like the Audi A5 or Mini Cooper S are a blast to drive, but also strike me as an exceptionally selfish vehicles. It's all about making the driver feel good, treating him (or her) as every decision he makes is a bold, powerful maneuver; instant steering, snap acceleration, dramatic braking. It's all about making the driver feel good about the driver. Juxtapose that with big SUVs or pickups, which don't provide those types of rewards for the driver. In fact, the only real driver advantages have to do with driving height or the ever illusive safety feel. More often, a vehicle like this is about what it can do for others: carrying others, carrying loads, towing a trailer for a large group, supporting family needs, etc. Of course, it's an oversimplification to say sports cars are for selfish people and trucks are for selfless people (and I can give you quite a few exceptions on either side of that argument) but there might be something in that here I'll have to give some thought.

Harsh and Jarring?
I haven't received my 2007 MCS yet, but am curious what you all think about the following quote from the MT blog. What is your experience of the ride?
"Also, as excellent as the S model's suspension is on the proving ground's handling course, it's harsh and jarring on freeways and uneven surfaces."
"Also, as excellent as the S model's suspension is on the proving ground's handling course, it's harsh and jarring on freeways and uneven surfaces."

OMG. MT last year annoited a Honda Civic. This year a Cadillac. I wonder how much Cadillac paid them! But looking at the field, there was not much competion to the Caddie, not even a BMW. We can only hope the Clubman gets considered fairly next year.
I have last years motortrend where they compared the wrx tuner edition, the mazdaspeed 3, the cooper s, ...
There were all sorts of mistakes made, they dogged the mini for a lack of available limited slip (not true), the non-functional scoop, and the playschool like hvac controls...
There are very few magazines that do anything more then reiterate what they glance over in the brochures & press releases. The best car awards always go to their best paying advertisers, and I don't think Mini has the sort of budget & sales & advertising numbers the big mainstream dogs have.
Grassroots Motorsports still has some good articles and MC2 has a pretty good grasp on things
