Engine Mods

I just thought I would let every one know, they better check with thier dealer before doing mods to the engine.
There were a couple items I wanted for my car and being I was at the dealer today I asked them about a couple items, they actually made a couple phone calls before they anserwed me, and I was a little surprized as I didn't think what I was going to do would be a problem, wrong I would have voided my warrenty on a new car with only 7,000 miles on it, personally I don't think I can afford voiding my warrenty. So the items I wanted are going to have to wait awhile.
I wish all the after market people well with thier business, and I will still be bying things like suspension parts, strut brace, etc, but sorry nothing that touches the engine for about 30 months, I should have the mileage run out on the warrenty by then.

What were the parts in question? There aren't any add-on parts that will automatically void your warranty. What will happen is if you have a warranty claim that they can show was caused by one of your modifications, then you'll probably be out-of-luck, but your overall warranty will still be in place.

I was going to put a new cat down pipe on.
The warrenty issue was not with the dealer, Mini the manufactor said if I bolt that type of item on my engine I would not have any warrenty.
I can't void my warrenty. For me that would be stupid.
And if there was a problem with the car latter, I sure would not want to spend the time or money going to court to try and get a repair.
What any one does is there own chioce.
There are products I want now but will wait for.

Well, if MINI said that "you wouldn't have any warranty" after installing a cat downpipe, they were lying outright. If you replaced the downpipe, and your headlights later stopped working, were they saying they wouldn't fix your headlights?

There's a difference between "voiding your warranty" and "refusing to fix things that have been damaged by aftermarket parts". The second one they can do, the first one they can't.

But you're right - it's your choice, so do whatever you're comfortable with.

I agree with you 100% some people here are way too worried about it. I think the dealers just try to scare people so they dont have to deal with it.

MINI is obligated to give a very conservative answer to your question. It is like asking a police officer if it is OK to drive 5mph over the limit - he has to answer "no" even if he knows he will never give anyone a ticket in that situation. The fact is that the warranty cannot be denied when something unrelated fails and the dealer has no incentive to **** off customers by unreasonably interpreting warranty rules. I have had modied MINIs since 2002 and have never run into a question on warranty. Dealers have asked me about the mods because they are interested in what can be done to the car, not because they are looking for excuses to not do work on the car.

My warranty just ran out a couple of months ago, but my MCS has a lot of mods and I never had a problem with Warranty items. Back up light not functioning, turn signal switch, window motor. None of them related to my mods.

Maybe I should have started a thread different like.

Who has a heavey moded out mini that has had an engine rebuilt or replaced, clutch or transmission replace, under warrenty ?

A lot of us drive these cars hard, including me, and the more HP you have tends to lead you to even drive the car harder.
The potential of an engine failure and no warrenty would be a big financil burden I would have a hard time paying for.

Well, you could stick with the JCW Stage I kit. Or, you could add parts to it that you can easily remove and replace with the stock part. If you had warrantee issues that weren't caused by non-MINI parts, return it to stock to avoid any arguments. If the problem was caused by a non-MINI part, contact the vendor. I believe that some vendors stand behind their parts. Check that aspect before buying non-MINI parts.
