Exhaust tip metal hair??

hi,
was just cleaning the exhaust tip of my mini cooper.
at the end of where the metal is sort of curved back in on itself i found what seemed to be like metalish sort of hair.
its in clumps, and is soaked in black sooty stuff.
anyway, was just wondering if i should keep this stuff in here or throw it out?
cheers
jono

That is the sound deadening that sits inside you muffler. How many miles are on your car? Does it sound louder than it used to?

Mine has had that too. My assumption was that it was just what "some guy" said. Has anyone torn into a OEM muffler and seen that "hair-like" material. If so, then that is undoubtibly your answer.

my mini gives off that stuff too. i think my muffler is indeed the tiniest bit louder but isn't that almost normal? my engine is louder too.
those little hairs dont bother me. but i always wondered wat it was and why it came out.

That's interesting - most OEM mufflers don't have packing material in them. Makes me wish I had cut open my stock muffler when I replaced my exhaust system.

Well, there is no reason to keep it. And unless it becomes a problem then i wouldnt really worry about it.
