Hey all,

I've seen a few different shifter mods that shorten the throw. Anyone have one? I'm looking at this adjustable one i saw, sounds promising, but is it? How easy are they to install?

The much awaited Madness short shifter will be available for purchase next week!!! Woohooo!!!! CHEAP too! 20% shorter throw.

As for install, you'll need to get under the car and unflange the header/exhaust, then remove some heat shielding to get access to the dust cover for the shifter assembly. Remove the cover....

...now with the Madness short shifter you'll simplly pop off the gear linkage, then pull up the shaft, attach the short shifter piece, screw it down, then reassemble everything.

...now with the Alta adjustable one, you'll also need to attack from above so as to totally remove the stock shifter, then replace with theirs and set to one of three settings. Can't use the stock gearshift with it.

Unflange the header? Will I need a new header gasket for the reinstall? Excuse my "chevyesque" question... hehe

I noticed on the RE description that it doesn't shorten the actual height of the shifter, which is something I wanted, in addition to reducing the throw. Does the Madness do this?

They are the same, at least the pic is the same in the two of them, and actuallye the intake was the same from the two shops.
Also if you read the bottom line it is actually just the fitting, same as RE.

I'm not impressed with "20% reduction"

Is someone working on a shifter assembly that will actually reduce throw? 50% is a number that would get my attention.
I suppose the ALTA kind of counts, with up to 45% throw reduction, however those set-screws leave me cringing at the flimsiness; and not being able to use the stock shift **** annoys me too. Honestly, what lack-of-an-arm wimp would ever consciously want to increase their shift throw?

The problem with the mini is that the shifter case under the car is just above the exhaust and in order to reduce the throw you will need to extend the pivot at the end and it is a limited space to do it. Or you have to sacrifice the size of the leveler inside the car... OF COURSE ALL OF THIS IS JUST MY OPINION

Hey julianvh,
How did RE/Madness take car of the clearance issues with the shift case? They won't reply to my emails. I liked the Mania solution of an additional dust shield, but I didn't like their 1 set screw. The RE sounds like a more solid unit, but I heard something about shrink wrap being used for their dust shield? I am having difficulty visualising how shrink wrap could be used as a shifter case replacement.

This is what i did,

I got a baking pan FOIL, small about 4 x 6 or so, and molded to the size of the box, then tape it with DUCK TAPE< the universal solution, jajaja, ok it do not look profesional, but the main use is to protect from dust and that should do it, pluss the box is covered by the heat shield...

I really am interested in a short shifter although I have my issues with all three that I know of on the market now. I want to keap my stock shift **** and shifter height, so the Alta is out. The RE shifter seems to be the best approach with multiple set screw for a more secure application, but I guess they conveniently did not address the dust cover issue (I know people say the heat shield will solve this, but I have a drive in garage and the doors are always closed but somehow my car still gets covered in pollen during spring. Dust will find its way into almost anything). The Mania solves that problem, but goes back to one set screw. AAAHH!!!! What am I to do? How secure are these set screws? I had a MOMO shift **** in my old car and every few months I would have to tighten them. Even with Loctite don't you still have the metal screw contacting the metal shifter? After a while, with all of the vibration and everything, won't that metal to metal contact scratch itself to the point where it becomes loose even at the initial set screw level with loctite? Someone has to come up with a shifter similar to the RE and Mania units which attaches the same way the shift cable attaches and uses an extra dust shield. This seems like the next logical step in shifter alterations. I would develop it myself as a public service, like pilo with the intake (well done by the way), but I am washing my hair tonight and I don't have time. Are there any aftermarket manufacturers paying attention to these forums? Monster mini doesn't have a shifter yet. Let's do it!

ceberlik, You can add a set screw to the Mini Mania short shifter, all it takes is a 1/8" tap and correct drill bit, sold as a pack at Lowes. You don't have to have a tapping chuck, a small vice grip will work to hold the tap. I'm sure you have or could borrow a drill. For insurance, use JB weld liberally and I bet it won't loosen then.
I'm not trying to tell you what to do, this is how I plan on doing mine.Good Luck, Itzamazn
