Road trip to Effigy Mounds National Monument
We took a road trip this past weekend to northeast Iowa and Effigy Mounds National Monument. Please take a look in my gallery for a photo journal of the trip, if you like.
You'll have to sort ascending by file name to get them in the right order, it appears to put them into LIFO order left to its own devices.
I hope you enjoy them!
I hadn't been to Effigy Mounds in eight years and it was time for a visit.
Effigy Mounds is one of my favorite parks, especially in the fall, because the weather is so nice and the hiking trails so peaceful. Also, there are some very fun twisty's along Highway 61 from Davenport to Dubuque.
The mounds were made by Native Americans between 1000 BC and 1300 AD. Some have supplies in them, some have human remains.
No one knows why the practice ceased, it had already stopped by the time Europeans began exploring the midwest and the Native Americans living there no longer remembered their function.
