Magnaflow Drones No More

My wife has the the old style Magnaflow exhaust on her 02 MCS. Those of you that have a Magnaflow know what I mean about the drone. It usually kicks in real good between 3000 to 4000 rpms. The drone usually doesn't bother us too much, but it can get old on a long trip since that is where the car runs at cruising speed.

Here is the original exhaust:

Recently they changed the set-up to the one below:

To me this looked more efficient and for a long time I thought about getting her older system changed to look like the newer system. I finally took it in and for $100, the shop changed the T to Y and split the tips so that it is a true dual exhaust. Unfortunately I don't have pictures because it was off the lift when I picked it up, but they really did a great job. The only draback was that the pipes are out another inch further than before. We left the shop and although we didn't notice a performance increase or decrease, it seemed a little quieter. It still sounded like the Magnaflow when you get on the throttle though, just not as harsh. Later that evening, we took off to the local MINI meet which is 50 mi away. After we got on the freeway and got up to speed, we both realized that the drone was gone. So I would say that even though there was no noticable performance increase, it was a good mod that really adds to the driving comfort.

wow. the original design of the magnaflow is pretty poor. especially the lack of mandrel bends before the muffler and that pipe connecting at the exhaust exit.
