Injured by my MINI!

At the risk of seeming like a complete dolt, and in the hopes of preventing another from the same fate, I have to reveal that I burned my shin on my Mini's exhaust pipe today...

I was leaning over the bumper, reaching for the seat in an attempt to pull it upright...and my shin came into contact with a very hot exhaust pipe. No blister...just took the skin right off. There are probably still remnants of vaporized skin on the exhaust pipe.

Not sure this picture does it justice:

OUCH! :( If you have aloe vera - the plant or gel, get it on NOW! I peeled skin from my calf off a friend's Kawasaki years ago, sliced open one of the aloe "leaves" or fronds or whatever it is called, and smeared that gel on. Did it each day, and had no scar!

I'm sure Wilhelmina didn't mean to bite. . .she's still getting used to her new home! :D

I take full responsibility. Stupid move considering I had just gotten out of the car. I guess I'm not used to having exhaust pipes that are so prominently placed.

Actually, it's good to know. I'm waiting for the MCS also, and just realized how closely I stand to take groceries out of the back. Those centered pipes ARE different/more prominent that the side one tucked away. . .

Sorry to hear about the bite, but don't feel bad, you are not the first. Have read several other posts about getting burned on the pipes.

Those pipes are one thing... be careful with that rear storage cover that lifts upwards when you open the trunk... It's as sharp as a knife and I cut myself a good one (the bridge of my nose) leaning into the trunk in a dimly lit garage. That was the day after the pipes burnt my 11 year old's shin. But Mini was forgiven. A little pain teaches us to beware. ;-)

Oh wow! And I thought I was the only one! I was doing the exact same thing! I instantly got burned. It left me a nice litte U shapped in my shins. Though I feel like me and my mini are one now...hahah Oh well...I tell everyone I got branded by my mini and also its a nice ice breaker when you are talking to a really cute girl.
By the way..chicks dig the mini's. Me=happy camper!

YOWIE !! Make sure that doesn't get infected, wm ! Appears it went all the way through the skin right to the flesh.

And don't beat yourself up. That wasn't so stupid... pretty common mistake, I would bet, and one that any of us could make. Well, maybe not ProfessorDave because... well, he's REALLY smart.

Heal quickly.

Gives me an idea for a sticker. A charicature leg with a crescent-shaped red mark on the shin. "MINIs BURN IT UP" in a circle around it. Only other MINI owners/accomplices would understand.

This is definitely worse in the MCS where the exhaust is more in the way, in the center. Get some bacatracin!

Ouch!! Hi, fellow Sacto-ite!

You need rear seat pull straps:

A few thoughts:

1) I'm a cyclist. Most cyclists get a chainring tatoo: a chainring-shaped grease mark on your calf. In time, you don't get chainring tatoos because, well, youu don't (or else you learn that black cycling gloves rub 'em off pretty quickly...)
2) It's a Mini mark! I like "hurts like hell, wont do that no more"...
3) I'm actually considering an Alta-type "S" exhaust and exiting it out the rear side (like a "Justa") - for this reason plus the ability to better get at my center-mounted MDM receiver hitch!
4) ...but then the appearance bug gets me and I want to put a big ol' oval exhaust tip on (instead of the OE tips), just to be different.

Ah well... think of it as a hot kiss... or a posession mark... or a Mini hickey!

YES! That's it! My aforementioned sticker design, with "MEMBER MINI HICKEY CLUB" in the circle!

I read another thread about this a couple of weeks ago. Thought it was dumb. Got burned the next day.

Doh!

I've burned myself on a few center exhausts. You'd think that I would gain the wisdom not to put my stupid leg there...

Well... in all fairness... it's not your leg that's stupid.

Had a close call one spring day as I was pulling out groceries... thankfully I was wearing pants. Nowadays I pretty much stand with my legs spread far apart when leaning into the boot. Otherwise I stand back a respectful distance.

Is this a problem with just the 2nd gen MINIs or are 1st gen owners seeing the same thing. My JCW tips get very warm, but not so hot that you can't pull away before you get burnt.

I'm wondering if the problem is related to the 2nd gen turbos (MCS) only.

With all these people being burned in such a hedious manner it's time that all R56 owners band together and contact NHSTA and demand a recall. For all those that have been burned my law firm of Dewy, Cheatem and Howe will be starting a class action suit against BMW/Mini. We expect that BMW/Mini will pay out in the millions, most of eaten by the exobitant legal fees the firm will charge. We expect a modest payout to those affected for pain and suffering.

Please contact our Arbitration Expert, Viola Fuss to start your claim today. Those that have been seriously hurt please contact Ophelia Paine to have your injuries documented.

My shin did this against a motorcycle once. I'd expect it from a motorcycle, but NEVER a MINI!

A few margaritas should fix you up just fine.

I burned my calf after driving my friend's 94 Viper, even after he warned me earlier to avoid the scalding hot side exhaust pipe... The burn looked exactly the same, so I guess that puts the Mini into the same category as a Viper now!

Lawyer up. Class action lawsuit for this obvious safety defect. ;-)
