Passenger air bag light blinks when starting up

I just wanted to know if anyone knows about this: I have a 2007 MC non-S...upon start-up the 'passenger air bag' light(up next to the rear-view mirror) blinks a couple of times and then turns off. Does this mean that the air bag is NOT REALLY working or is it letting me know that it's ACTIVE and ready for action(hopefully not). Does anyone else notice this on their R56 right after starting the car? I checked the manual but the information is VAGUE...

Yes, this means the airbag for the un(under)occupied seat is off (if there is some, but not sufficient weight, it still turns off. But a computer bag is enough weight to set off the seat belt chime. Argh)

The way I read it, if someone is sitting in the passenger seat, the light should not come on. I keep meaning to test this, but always forget.
