Nav and Polarized Sunglasses

Does anyone have the navigation and polarized sunglasses? From http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...est_drive.html I read this:

An inexcusable gaffe: The Bimmer's radio display goes black when viewed through polarized glasses.
Does the MINI navigation have the same problem?

No, mini doesn't have the "problem". And the poster in the above article is WRONG, it's not BMW
's fault. Polarization works in one direction, and polarized glasses are made in many different directions. LCD screens are also made oin many directions. Some are horizontal, some are vertical, some are even diagonal. So what you need is a sunglass that polarizes in the same direction the LCD display your looking at is made. If the screen goes black (or dark) when viewing thru glasses, try hldng your glasses up, and turn them, you wll find that they will work fine in the other direction.

The sunglass brand Maui Jims are all polarized. They are the smartest, there glasses are all made diagonal. so they work on almost ALL LCD screens.

The real problem is there is not standard on this. so you might get a good pair of glasses to work with the Nav, but they won't work with your Phone or vice versa....

Try coming on my boat one day, I have 5 different LCD screens (Sounder, GPS Chartplotter (nav), VHF radio, Radar, Autopilot). They are ALL different, drive me nuts. then throw in my phone for kicks.....

For the record, my Maui jims work perfect with the mini Nav.

yeah, calling this a design flaw shows the authors clear misunderstanding of polarized filters. Turn your head, and voila, the display is back!

Yeah - this still freaks me out on my stereo some days - if I look at it with my head slightly tilted, the display disappears - if I straighten up, it reappears... Sometimes I forget I have my shades on and start cursing that the !@#$! thing is broken... then I remember and calm back down. It would be funny if I only did it ONCE - but with my old guy short term memory, I've done it at least 3 or 4 times....

BTW - the angle of polarization also impacts what reflected light gets blocked - so rotating the axis of polarization in the lenses to interfere less electronic displays may have the effect of NOT reducing reflected glare as well - for example - my glasses make my dash look completely dead matte black when driving on a sunny day - if I take of the glasses (or put on non-polarized ones) the dash is almost blinding, it's reflecting so much glare...)...

I don't have the same problem. My sunglasses are polarized and the only thing that I've ever noticed is that the glass on my boot has a checkboard pattern (and not from decals) when I wear my sunglasses.

I notice that pattern on the boot glass also. I was trying to figure out why.... it must be polarized glass maybe....?

My girl noticed that on the door glass, my Oakley's don't see it though. But I don't ahve NAV so I wouldn't notice, but that makes sense why it's hard to read my RAZR sometimes.

Some food for thought...

reflected light tends to have polerizations closer to horizontal, so virticle orientation of polarized glasses is preferred for glare reduction.

The array you see in rear windshields has to do with the thin film used to laminate the glass. The stress array makes the patterns you see.

Earlier (and now cheaper) LDC technology needed to orient the liquid crystals. I think more expensive newer displays aren't oriented the same way.

Being a surfer for some 45 plus years and I'm only guessing you are from the screen name and local... you don't need Nav to find the beach. Head West and stop the MINI when the tyres don't float on the wet stuff.

Dr O, shouldn't you be changing some nappy's about now? Been there, done that.

I thought all LCD's came from the "Orient" nowadays??

Sndwave,
I've been Surfing for 35 years, on the East coast, and trust me when I tell ya, you need NAV (and a storm and some luck...) to find the waves out here...
