Funky stripes?

My wife's 2004 is developing rusty colored patches in the white stripes but only right up next to the windshield. Is this typical? It lives outside in the sun and rain so perhaps the material is rotting? I expect I will have to peel them off and put new ones on, but I was curious if anyone else had experienced this.

I am assuming you are talking about the Bonnet Stripes?

I don't know how long your MINI has had stripes on it but my MINI has had OEM white stripes (ungaraged) since Dec 31, 2004 & they look close to brand new (the brand new came after I threw caution to the wind & ran the PC over them to polish off the crap 2 months ago) but still they showed no massive deterioration prior to that only minor brownish discoloration & staining

PC=Porter Cable Random Orbit Polisher My bonnet stripes get little orange spots on them from time to time and I just whip out the PC and a litte Amigo and some Epic and they disappear.

Amigo=a glaze made by Detailers Paradise
Epic=a polymer based wax made by Detailers Paradise

In 55 years I've used lots of different waxes and stuff, Prima products from Detailers Paradise are the BEST I've ever used . Try them especially Hydro and you'll see what OCD is.

Sounds like maybe run-off from the windshield wipers has worked its way under the stripes.

Yours, mine, your wife's, your son's, your daughter's...especially if there's a history of breast cancer in the family.

They are factory installed stripes.

Here is a photo of the problem.

I have tried rubbing compound and nada. This looks like it is deep down in the vinyl. We first started noticing this about 6 weeks ago, and it is getting worse day by day.

Mighty Mini if I were you after all you have tried, I would throw in the towel & just order some new aftermarket stripes. They are only $45 from Cooper Flags. You can install them yourself easily & Cooper Flags puts out quality products
