Downgrade CAI?

I guess that's what you'd call it. I have the Alta CAI V2 with silicone hose - self install.

It really is too much SC whine for me. I've considered just changing the filter (to an K&N or ???) to "shave off" some of the whine. Don't know if that would work or not.

I have the stock intake I could put back in but don't want to regret any power loss. In the grand scheme, I don't think it will be a big deal.

Had considered the Dinan but there weren't many folks here that had one at the time.

So, looking for some input.

Try another filter?

Back to stock?

Dinan?

I went with a different cowl from mini-madness to cut down on some of the SC whine. It does not take all of it away, but does subdue it some IMHO.

get the m7 ddm...
or add the alta box top and a cowl with a smaller hole
or get the jcw box
or mod the stock box to accept a cowl hole and a cone filter.

all good options for performance with less sc whine.

If you don't like the loud SC sound then don't press to hard on the throttle.
Be gentle and you'd hardly hear it.

Seems like a lot of rework to remove it.

Dinan or JCW CAI makes some sense. probably quiet enough. Go for a test drive with someone that has one just to confirm.

I don't notice a diminishing of the supercharger scream with my boxtop. It sure doesn't eliminate the ever-present ALTA whistle, either. I was under the impression that, when I got it, the boxtop was supposed to keep the crud out of the intake more efficiently, as well as just make the air coming into it cooler.

Thanks for all the input. Someone in our local club decided on the Dinan (after hearing my Alta) I'll have a listen before any major surgery.

In the meantime, I did a "test" mod to see how it might sound with some sort of reduction.

It's crude, I know. But it DID what I expected - cut that high pitch that seems to come through the dash. I think the MINI-Madness cowl that minicr8zy suggested is what I'm looking for... for now anyway.

More later...

PS That white "thingy" is a piece of styrofoam I had lying around. Fit the first time. Patent pending.

I removed my Alta V2 cai too because although it gained some topend performance it drove like a pig down low. I also tried the lid & it made no difference. My solution was the JCW airbox with the internal flap removed & a higher flowing k&N style filter, this mod gives the best of both worlds-great topend power without the loss of bottem end torque & its virtually as quiet as the standard intake. Expensive but the ultimate cai solution IMO.

Just for grins - you may want to try your stock hose with the Alta intake... I have an Alta hose on my Dinan, and I really think the hose accounts for a good bit of the sound (my Dinan seems much louder than some, and I have throttle whistle). The stock hose seems to muffle SC and throttle sounds somewhat - the Alta hose doesn't...

Hmmm...an interesting idea. Could spark a debate on whether or not the silicone hose makes a difference or not. Thanks for the input!

I had a ddm clone, and it was too aggressive for me. My HAI seems to spool faster, and i dont get the annoying whistle on the highway.

As others have said just put the plastic fire-wall partition back in. That will reduce the sound just like that styrofoam is.

My HAI is a K&N filter attached directly to the throttle body... which filter? i've used two.... the usual one they talk about in the HAI thread, and a K&N RU 3590, which fits much better in my opinion, plus i like cone filters much better than the rectangular ones.... ::cheers::

That's my plan...now that I found it! Thanks!
