Hope this is not redundant... block heater question...

I feel like a dolt, but....
Will I be needing to have a block heater installed? I just now thought of this (sad eh!)

Thanks for the input!

Oh... In that case, I have no idea. I have read posts about people being thankful they had them, though.

Some info here on the old model

I expect dennis63 will pop in shortly, he seems to know a lot about Canadian options (e.g. I think half of LynnEl's cold weather package is standard up there?)

I believe there was also a heated front windshield option also part of the cold weather package.

In the winter of course, LOL

(I was born in Northern Iowa, grew up Mts of Colorado, so not quite as cold as up there, but I've seen cold!) Just some ribbing. You can send the same my way in August. A little warm here then.

I live in Yellowknife where we get 8-9 months of winter (with - 20 C the mean and waaayyyy colder) and the cold is a major issue for me. I am in the process of buying so maybe I should get them to throw in a block heater!

I have not needed a block heater in Calgary over the past two winters. '05 MCS - starts first time. "Only" down to -25C though (global warming!)

Well i contacted my service dept and they do not have an available block heater for the '07 model as of yet. SA said that his mini (an '05 as well) starts just fine at about the same temperature as YYC does (-25C) love the global warming! LOL Anyway, I am going to keep following up with them, and checking the boards.... We had an extreme cold stretch this past winter, a week of over -35... But I always have another car to run on those days, but have to make sure to keep my battery charged in both!
I will be sure to follow up with winandroo to see what is advised there...

Yah I had the same response from my dealer that there is nothing available. There is someone else in town with an '02 who just had one put in but says she never had a problem. I will let y'all know how it goes in December/January when it's a bajillion below!

If it's any consolation I have a block heater on my '04 Cooper Classic and have not used it once.
I would not be surprised that the dealer is not offering a block heater on the R56 models, as that is the way with BMW cars as well.

When I brought up the option on the block heater, the dealer said they could do it, but prob wouldn't need it? In Winnipeg I asked incredulously? I think I want it?

Hi everyone!

I have an 03 MCS and live in Sudbury, Ontario which is located in northern ontario about four hours north of T.O. It does get rather cool up here in the heart of winter. I have a block heater installed in my MCS, it was the second accessory I had installed. The magnetic type that attaches to the oil pan. I know the pan is aluminum, it was adhered to the pan with some sort of contact cement. I am a big believer in block heaters, they may not be totally necessary on todays vehicles but warm oil flows MUCH better than oil that has been sitting in your pan all night at -25C or colder all night long. The engine will come up to operating temp much quicker when it has a block heater.

Anyways those are my two cents on block heaters.

You don't need the block heater if you have synethic oil in your car. The oil will still flow at -50C

All you really need to worry about is the battery. Just make sure it has alot of CCA (Cold cranking amps).

Other then that your all set to go.

well we just ended a month long cold snap of less than -30 every day. My mini did pretty well but it blew some sort of sensor for the clutch and had to go all the way to edmonton on the back of a truck. Ug. I'd still feel better with a block heater.

The salesperson I dealt with when my mini was delivered told me because it runs on synthetic oil, you will never need a block heater.

I'm not sure if that is completely true. But if you live in Northern Alberta. You will have the peace of mind if you have one on the mini for sure.

Well we have had a few nights of -35 to -42c and my car starts fine up till -32 and then the car says to me, I DON'T THINK SO!!! lol
But then when it warms up, starts no problem..

I was told the same thing, no need for a block heater...AS IF, then why wouldn't it start... Just saying...

But I am impressed at how low it will go without the block heater...

Alrighty, then..
that is my update! lol
