R56 rubber mats, velcro fabric peeling off
rubber mats, velcro fabric peeling off
The velcro that grabs the mats to hold them in place is really strong and now its peeling the fabric circle off the mat. Is this happening to anybody else? What is the right kind of glue to put it back in place?
If your mats are brand new lift them carefully when you take the mat out - get your fingers underneath and hold the fabric in place.

I've noticed this too. On BMW's, there is a keyed slot in the carpet, on each side of where the mat's velcro is. The mating hard velcro disc on the carpet keys into this slot. When using BMW rubber winter mats, you remove the hard velcro disc, and replace it with a keyed hook. The hook then secures the rubber mat. It's a shame BMW did not use this same system on the MINI.
With regard to reattaching the velcro to the mats, I would use solvent based (not latex) contact cement.

Did you dealer "install" the floor mats? They probably didn't bother with the discs, which would be why you have your problem. Note that the driver's mat is the only one that has the discs to secure them.
Same problem...
When they showed me my freebie rubber mats, i remembered seeing a set of velcro's in the bag. However, after they washed my mini and put the mats in, i noticed there's no velcro. They forgot to put them on and now my rubber mats keeps sliding up.
Maybe i'll bug them on my first service.

No velcro on mine as well. I'll bug them on my first service as well. They don't seem to slide up that bad though.

Weird! What a coincidence.
I just had mine in today to have some warranty done and my viper stripes applied. One of the things on my list of warranty complaints was the rubber Mini mats I bought 10 days ago were peeling as described above but when they opened a couple of other bags to give me a replacement they found that the others were doing it as well so they just repaired mine. Not sure what they did but my guess is it starts with crazy and ends with glue.

My mat has been sliding up as well. They have no velcro on them at all. I don't totally understand what should be there. Anyone have photos?
They were free from the dealer and my MA just laid them in there. I live 3 hours from the dealer and don't feel like hassling with this. I'm tempted to glue my own velcro strips on the back of the mat. Any suggestions?

No velcro, eh??? That's surprising...maybe a dealer oversight?? I've had carpeted mats in both my MINIs and they all had velcro. I will concur that over time the velcro disks will tear the foam backing on the mats and pull away, so removing the mats w/ some care will likely prolong their life...although with carped one can always glue and stitch the suckers back in place and they won't be going anywhere.
What sounds like you are missing are two plastic discs that are attached to the carpet in the footwell right in front of the seats - these are the hook side of the velcor and correspond to the fabric circles, so it grabs the mats so they don't slide. Sounds like these come with the mats and a lot of dealers are lazy about installing them. I had thought they came installed from the factory but apparently not.
Greg - You are correct. The mats have the loop side, but there's nothing on the floor of the car. I think I'll just buy some velcro and put it on the floor. Will I regret that course of action? Or can I get ahold of the discs that attach to the carpet?
The dealer should give you the discs, don't you think? Sounds like they probably have lots of them, probably the floor behind the service counter they are up to the SA's ankles by now, and the gutter outside the dealer must be filled with them.
I'll email my MA and see what he says. They were very busy the day I picked up my car and I'm sure he just didn't take the time to put the discs in. I don't know why he wouldn't have given them to me to do it.
Just heard back from my MA. He apologized, saying that sometimes the discs get misplaced or not installed. He will send them in the mail today. This further confirms my feeling that he is very good at his job and the working with the dealer, MINI of Sterling, has been very positive.
I'm not sure I have disks either but I will say the mats seem to be working/sticking fine without!! I'm wondering if the disks were too aggressive since the velcro/foam eventually pulled off my '03 mats. I can do with a little less grip is the mats will last longer.
Nice to see this thread, I wondered why they had a poor design, but it turns out to be a incomplete installation. Time to call the MA. If you reach down to pull the mat back since it can cause the gas peddle to depress when you don't expect it, this can cause an accident.
I have found myself pulling the mat back almost automatically each time I get into scooter. Now I understand.
