MITM ~ BBQ Contest!

Yes, it is true. The rumor about a BBQ contest is a fact, and here are the details:
  • BBQ at the Summit! August 10-11, 2007
  • A State Championshp BBQ Contest
  • Held in Dillon, CO (just 2 miles past Frisco on I-70)
  • A KCBS Kansas City BBQ Society Qualifier
  • The contest is open to the public and we recommend that MITM attendees, if passing thru Dillon on one of your rides, stop for a bone or two...
More information? www.BBQatthesummit.com

Hope to see you there!

Well, it won't really need a run but...

since it is only 8 miles down the road, perhaps we DO post for a trip down there. The smell alone is worth the trip. This is the thread.

BBQ at the Summit

Just so you know there is a BBQ festival in Dillon (a really short drive from Copper) on Friday and Saturday while we're there. I went last year while we we're at MITM and they have some delicious BBQ and other foods. If I remember right the food wasn't that expensive and there are lots of different food vendors. So there should be something for everyone. So check it out and I will be there for sure. I can't wait.

Friday & Saturday, August 10 & 11
BBQ at the Summit
Presented by the Rotary Foundation of Summit County
Downtown Dillon
August 10, 12:00pm – 9:00pm
August 11, 10:00am – 6:00pm
An event to benefit the Rotary Foundation of Summit County. Experience one of the nation’s highest BBQ challenges as over 9,156 feet of spices, rubs and down-home eats taunt your taste buds. Competitors vie for 1st place in our Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event. Live music, entertainment, raffles, salsa and sauce competitions, kids’ activities and more round-out the festivities.

No harm in bringing it up again

I think it was a good idea.

Kind of made me hungry, tho, being a BBQ head.

Not to beat my chest or anything...but missing the contest is a bummer for me. I am a certified BBQ judge (KCBS) and the next contest I get to judge is the big American Royal Open and the AR Invitational, this fall in Kansas City.

Can't wait. Never a bad time for good BBQ.

Don't know how I missed this one. Our club is staying in Dillon and I love me some good BBQ!
Jonathan, since you are a judge, have you seen many entrants do the NC style (no tomatoes, just vinegar and spices)?

You might think judging is easy.

It is not. Further, according to the KCBS sanctioning body, what I think of what it tastes like matters not. The key is what the cook intended, and how did it come off. I may not like the marinade, smoke flavor, run, mop, sauce, etc. but if it comes off as good BBQ then it gets judged well. Appearance. Taste. Texture. They all matter. A good taste on rib meat that is undercooked and will not separate from the bone....will not be judged well. A good taste on brisket that falls apart when you pick it up...will not be judged well. A good pork shoulder that tastes like pork shoulder...but not like BBQ....will not be judged well.

And yes, I do like the NC style. In fact, I like them all. I am not a food snob, I have lived in KC and TX and like them both, differently. Never yet Memphis or NC but there is still time.

I say, BBQ is BBQ. Better than veggies any day of the week.
