...what do you do about it? So as not to give them a burn or skin cancer....I'm in NorCal and it's HOT already. We have a Honda Element and the sunroof is in back (because of the missing B-pillar due to suicide doors) and our 9-mo. old gets a burn every time we go out. I've tried to craft a "bonnet" from the hood on his backpack carrier but it kind of sucks.

We should get our Mini by the end of June/early July (with a sunroof) and am wondering if there is any gadget out there to handle this problem? What does everyone else do?

What about the mesh screen that you can slide in place, won't that take care of the problem? It won't block out all the sun, but there won't be direct sun.

He gets a sunburn through the sunroof glass? I thought that the glass (just like the windshield and side windows) filters out most of the UV. That's why you don't get a "trucker tan" driving with your windows up. Sunburn shouldn't be a problem...of course, heat is a whole other matter.

My kids (all older than 9 months) absolutely love the sunroof on the MINI and constantly clamor to have it opened. In fact, they like it open more than I do.

There's been talk of an aftermarket solid sunroof shade being eventually made. It sounds as if you could benefit from this, and until then, lather the little guy up with sunblock (as I'm sure you must do when he's outside out of the car). Good luck!

The sunroof in the Element has got a pretty good tint on it but alot of sun still comes in (we're in Sacramento, which in the summer, is the same as Phoenix). I've heard the mesh screen is similar to a tint job but perhaps it's better. Oh well, we'll find out in about a month!

How about putting another layer of tint on the window? That way you can be sure of how much uv rays it will block..

Try sunblock an spf-30 or higher. You will see, due to the depletion of the ozone layer, an increase rate of skin cancers, especially in the sun belt of the US.

Protect the wee ones with sunblock.

It's not bad at all with the mesh closed. I've not yet found it a problem in Atlanta (though it's only been up to about 85 this year so far--tough to believe.)

Other thoughts:
--when the roof is open, the front section overlays the back, and doubles the tint factor.

--At least one local sign guy has offered to make up a perforated vinyl applique to go on the sunroof (like the union jack flags you see advertised.) Plain white or black to match your roof color. I'm sure an of the vendors offering this stuff could do that for you.

My kids have yet to have a problem. Longest trip was 7 hrs with them in back.

Jeff

you can get a perferated sticker from cooper flags (one of the sponsors of MCO) and that combined with the screed should really reduce the ammount of sun coming through.

I installed mine 2 weeks ago, no more sunburn for the kids or overheated bald head for me. It was fairly simple to install, my wife and I did it in 20 minutes.

I'm in Colorado now and the sun is even more intense than Sacramento (wife is from The Peoples Republic of Davis). I do have the perforated flag from Car Vogue. It is excellent. I understand they have outlets for the US now. You can go to Southern California Mini Maniacs; they have a link from their webpage in the goodies section.
